Private Instructor, Electric Bass Lessons
The School of Arts & Technology at Selkirk College is seeking an experienced individual to deliver private electric bass lessons either in-person at the Tenth Street campus in Nelson, BC or remotely using Zoom. Our innovative program is based on the world-renowned Berklee College of Music curriculum and provides individual private instruction on bass, voice, guitar, piano, drums, saxophone, trumpet, and violin.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach private electric bass lessons, tailoring instruction to meet students’ individual needs and goals.
- Teach electric bass technique, including relevant aspects of contemporary electric bass playing.
- Guide students in the selection of repertoire, considering skill level, musical interests, and program requirements.
- Conduct regular assessments and provide constructive feedback to students.
- Foster a supportive learning environment, encouraging students to explore their creativity.
- Prepare students to follow their own stylistic interests.
- Grade assignments while adhering to institutional standards.
- Uphold the college’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Knowledge of electric bass technique and proficiency playing electric bass in contemporary genres such as pop, rock, jazz, and R&B. Proficiency on acoustic bass is an asset.
- Ability to teach students of diverse skill levels, ranging from beginner to advanced.
- Strong sight reading, music notation, and improvisation skills.
- Ability to relate with a diversity of students from multiple cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and engage students.
Education and Experience
- A Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent professional experience.
- A minimum of three years’ experience performing as a professional electric bassist.
- A minimum of three years’ experience teaching private electric bass lessons. Teaching at the post-secondary level is an asset.
Applicants are required to submit links to audio and/or video examples of recent performances.
This is a short-term, casual appointment with approximately 4 to 7 hours of private lessons per week, beginning September 8, 2025, and ending December 12, 2025, with the possibility of renewal. The hourly rate is in accordance with Schedule E of the SCFA Collective Agreement, ranging from $67.33 ‐ $100.43, based on qualifications and experience.
