Electrical Operator (Control Room) (Apprentice / Journeyperson)
Bluewater Power Distribution Corporation is the founding member of the Bluewater Power Group of Companies, headquartered in Sarnia Ontario. A progressive local distribution company, Bluewater Power distributes power to over 35,000 customers in six Sarnia-Lambton communities. The Bluewater Power Group of Companies also includes the following independent market driven private Corporations: Electek Power Services Inc., Bluewater Power Services Corporation, Bluewater Power Renewable Energy Inc., and Bluewater Regional Networks Inc.
The Electrical Operator is responsible for supporting the reliable operation of its electrical distribution system. This position plays a key role in real-time system monitoring, outage response, and coordination of field activities to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous power delivery. The successful candidate will work within a fast-paced control room environment, support emergency response efforts, and contribute to system planning and operational improvements. This is a permanent, full-time, union position.
Duties include:
- Control the daily operations of the distribution system.
- Oversee and maintain the SCADA system on a daily basis.
- Perform as required in response to load reduction and/or load shedding during emergency and peak conditions, and maintain system optimization in relation to power factor, line losses, voltage levels, etc.
- Prepare and execute switching orders, issue hold-offs, work permits, supporting guarantees, operate switching devices as required and controls distribution with a view to providing optimum service to customers. Coordinating the system to permit routine and emergency maintenance and switching.
- Identify and co-ordinate emergency situation responses.
- Maintain distribution log records of all switching devices and keeping an update of any changes in the system.
- Process all incoming customer calls, assess customer problems and dispatch required personnel.
- Monitor customer contracted substations and Co-Generation stations.
Qualifications:
- Instrumentation and Control Technician or Electrical Technician/Technologist Diploma preferred including electrical theory and distribution system fundamentals. Candidates with secondary education combined with equivalent experience may also be considered.
- Completion of MEARIE Electrical Operator training considered an asset.
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of the operating functions of the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), OMS (Outage Management System), FLISR (Fault Location, Isolation and ServiceRestoration), GIS (Geographic Information System) and the MeterSense system.
- Proficient in SAP CIS (Customer Information System)
- Proficient in P/C software applications (data bases, spreadsheet, word processing etc.)
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of the of distribution system with capacity to operate according to processes outlined in current procedures manual and Hydro One Work Protection Code.
- Must live within the residency restrictions defined by Bluewater Power.
