Specific Accountabilities:
- Works with Associate VP and Director to help achieve enrollment targets by planning, developing, scheduling, and delivering comprehensive and accurate information in various formats including: one-on-one consultations, recruitment activities on and off campus and college events;
- Works directly with education liaisons in local Indigenous communities to identify needs for secondary students and adult learners who are considering post-secondary options;
- Liaise with Indigenous communities and identified recruitment opportunities, practicing appropriate cultural protocols with Elders and cultural persons;
- Liaise with Indigenous students encouraging involvement and supporting their learning, with a focus on outreach, transition, and retention including academic support programs;
- Participate in the research, planning and implementation of programming to support the academic success and development of Indigenous students;
- Assist with the tracking of success of Indigenous students that would include coordinating data collection and reporting on results;
- Develop workshops to support the success and retention of Indigenous students. Work with staff and community to promote academic skill development workshops including cultural topics, Indigenous rights, identity and life skills;
- Attend Indigenous specific meetings and participate as an effective member of the Indigenous Education Council;
- Provide information and application support for Indigenous specific scholarships and bursaries
- Participate in the college wide orientation plan and develop outreach activities to reach Indigenous learners;
- Guides and advises part-time staff and student employees;
- Other duties as assigned.
About the Position:
This is a temporary, full time support staff position replacing a bargaining unit employee, reporting to the Director of Indigenous Education, working 35 hours per week at an hourly rate of $36.29. This position will start as soon as possible and run for approximately 6 months.
This is a targeted search for an Indigenous staff appointment. Candidates from Indigenous communities are encouraged to self-identify, including those who identify as First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in accordance with the special programs provisions of the Human Rights Code.
Working with Lambton College’s Indigenous Services Team and Student Success Division, the major duties and responsibilities of the Indigenous Student Success Coordinator can be summarized in the following areas: Indigenous community outreach & recruitment, Indigenous student transitional programming, academic and peer supports, as well as cultural and Elder programming The Indigenous Student Success Coordinator focuses on enhancing the student experience and ensuring effective support that contributes to Indigenous student success and retention of Indigenous students. This position helps to achieve enrolment by promoting Lambton College as the higher learning institution of choice for prospective Indigenous students.
Qualifications:
- Minimum three-year post-secondary diploma in Indigenous Studies/Education, Business, Marketing, or Social Sciences
- Minimum of three years practical experience in an educational environment advising and assisting students
- To foster language revitalization, a First Nation language speaker would be considered an asset
- Highly motivated, independent, self starter and positive team player
- Must be able to set priorities, initiate action, and organize multiple tasks to maintain flow of work and meet demanding deadlines
- Demonstrated experience working with Turtle Island Indigenous/Aboriginal Peoples and communities
- Understanding of Indigenous approaches to establishing trust based relationships
- Understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous forms of knowledge transmission and its use in an academic setting
- Demonstrated experience with Indigenous cultural event organizing
- High level of lived customary Indigenous knowledge including cultural protocols and teachings
- Familiar with credible, traditional Elders and Knowledge Keepers
- Demonstrated respect for customary Indigenous cultural practices, protocols and ceremonies
- Direct experience as an Indigenous post-secondary student with clear understanding of factors impacting Indigenous student success
- Clear first-hand knowledge of complex issues of Canadian colonial systems and the continued impact on Indigenous Peoples and communities
- Active Indigenous community member
- Demonstrated understanding of diverse experiences of Indigenous Peoples and communities
- Experience developing and delivery presentations, workshops, and information sessions
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills to communicate with internal and external contacts, students, faculty, and administrative staff
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office products
