About the role

Who We Are

We're a mission- and values-driven company with tremendous dedication to our customers. Our 100% remote team, spread across the US and Canada, is dedicated to a common goal – to revolutionize healthcare through innovation, collaboration, and commitment to our core values and behaviors.

About the Opportunity

This isn't just another backend role. We are looking for a foundational member of our engineering team—a Staff Platform Software Developer who will take on our most critical architectural challenges. You won't be stuck on a single feature team; you will be our platform technical lead, responsible for the architectural integrity, performance, and scalability of the entire Synthesis Health platform.

Your initial mission will be to lead a cross-functional "Tiger Team" on a deep dive into our core systems. You will be empowered to instrument, analyze, and diagnose our toughest performance and scalability bottlenecks. You will produce the architectural blueprints and technical roadmap that the rest of the engineering organization will use to build a more resilient, reusable, and performant platform. You will then help to implement the Tiger Team's recommendations.

If you are a builder who thrives on solving complex distributed systems problems, eliminating bottlenecks, and mentoring others to elevate their technical game, this is your opportunity to make a defining impact.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead Foundational Architectural Initiatives

  • Spearhead deep-dive analyses of our current architecture. You will own the process of instrumenting our end-to-end systems, identifying performance bottlenecks, and understanding our complete data and caching flows.

  • Evolve our system architecture to be more scalable, resilient, and simpler to reason about. You will design solutions that increase stability, enable component reuse, and reduce architectural complexity, allowing our delivery teams to move faster.

Drive Performance and Reliability

  • Champion a culture of performance and reliability. You will shape best practices for observability, monitoring, and performance testing, and guide teams in implementing solutions that meet our strict performance and uptime requirements.

Guide Technical Strategy and Mentorship

  • Produce high-quality architectural diagrams and technical documentation that serve as the blueprint for the entire engineering organization.

  • Act as a technical mentor to senior engineers across the organization. You will elevate the team's understanding of architectural principles and best practices through design reviews, knowledge sharing, and direct mentorship.

  • This is not an "ivory tower" architect role. You will write code, contributing directly to implementations of critical architectural components and refactoring efforts.

What We're Looking For

  • Deep Experience in Distributed Systems: 8+ years of software development experience with a proven track record of designing, building, and operating complex, scalable, and high-performance distributed systems.

  • Architectural Vision and Pragmatism: You can think in abstractions and design for the future, but you are pragmatic and know how to break down a complex vision into achievable, iterative steps.

  • End-to-End Performance Expertise: You have hands-on experience instrumenting and debugging performance issues across a full stack—from application code and databases to caching layers and infrastructure—using modern performance profiling, testing, and monitoring tools.

  • Hands-On Expertise with Modern Tech Stacks: You have deep, practical knowledge of the principles and technologies behind our platform:

o Microservices, event-driven design, and distributed architectures.

o Cloud (GCP preferably), with hands-on experience in Docker and Kubernetes (e.g., GKE, Cloud Run).

o Expertise across relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/AlloyDB, MongoDB, Redis) and data warehousing (e.g., BigQuery).

o Real-world experience with Pub/Sub messaging systems (e.g., Google Cloud Pub/Sub, Kafka).

  • A Gift for Communication: You can clearly articulate complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences. Your diagrams and documents are a source of clarity, not confusion.

  • Leadership Through Influence: You have a demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor other senior engineers, earning trust and driving consensus without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare Domain Experience: While engineering excellence is paramount, your application will stand out if you have experience in regulated industries. Deep familiarity with healthcare data standards (DICOM, HL7) and compliance regulations (HIPAA) is a significant advantage.

Why You Should Join Us

  • Solve Our Toughest Puzzles: This is a high-leverage role. You will be working on the most impactful technical challenges that are critical to the company's success.

  • Define the Architecture: You won't just be maintaining a system; you will be a primary author of its future state, with the autonomy to make it happen.

  • Lead from the Front: This is a chance to lead a high priority "Tiger Team" and establish yourself as a key technical voice in a rapidly growing company.

  • Competitive Compensation & Benefits: We offer a strong salary, meaningful equity, a 100% remote culture, and significant opportunities for growth.

We are a values-driven company. Our values:

  1. Clinical service first.

  2. Collaborate with our customers.

  3. Listen, respect, learn.

  4. Innovate to excel.

The behaviors we look for:

  1. Be nice.

  2. Be creative.

  3. Be honest.

  4. Be helpful.

Compensation and Benefits

Synthesis Health has a location-based compensation plan. Compensation is paid in the currency of the country where the individual resides. For Canadian applications the salary range for this position is $115,000 - $145,000 CAD.

Other benefits include, but are not limited to: Medical, Dental, Vision, "Use as needed" vacation policy, and participation in our employee option program.
