Position Summary

Telecommunications Operator, Telecommunications:
The Telecom Operator is part of the 24-hour Switchboard and Locating Centre and as front-line staff: receives internal and external emergency calls, initiates emergency response (such as codes), pages a variety of hospital services, operates a computerized telephone console and as well as a variety of communications hardware and software and administrative duties as assigned. Your goal in this position is to operate the Hospital switchboard. You have knowledge of telephone communications and accurate keyboarding skills. You have strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with the public and staff, to work in a fast-paced environment and to work effectively in a team environment. You have strong organization skills and excellent command of spoken and written English and French as an asset. teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Locate Hospital staff inside and outside the Hospital
  • Document all Locating requests
  • Answer patient inquiry calls
  • Place long distance calls for patients
  • Give out pertinent information concerning doctors on staff
  • Observe Service Panel and monitor and takes appropriate action
  • Respond to alarm systems
  • Respond to emergency procedures
  • Create Hospital On Call schedules
  • Must be confidential and tactful in the access and use of highly sensitive patient information
  • Must be able to communicate information in clear manner during life-threatening situations
  • Must possess excellent oral, written communication skills and active listening skills
  • Must work in a team environment while dealing with diversity and conflict resolution.
  • Must possess administrative acumen to undertake other reasonable duties and projects as assigned
  • Must be able to operate various software application including: computerized soft telephone, various internal databases, electronic mail and web-based applications
  • Must be able to adapt to use of new technology when implemented
  • Must have the ability to transmit messages through various mediums (system, telephone, pager, device, overhead, etc.)
  • Must undertake other communications related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year’s telephone switchboard experience in a hospital setting
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ customer service experience
  • Bilingualism in French / English an asset

This is a Full Time Regular position, 8 hours shifts, evening shifts including 2 out of 3 weekends (Weekend shifts every 6 weeks.) in the Telecommunications unit at the North York General Hospital 4001 Leslie St., Toronto, ON M2K 1E1 and RCC 555 Finch Avenue West, Toronto Ontario M2R 1N5 Sites.
