Braemar Retirement Centre (MacGowan Nursing Home) is an accredited 69 bed licensed Long Term Care facility located in Wingham, Ontario. Braemar is a proud RNAO Best Practice Spotlight organization and is working towards becoming a DementiAbility certified home who aims to provide a collaborative, person-centered environment for staff and residents alike.
We are excited to announce we currently have an opening for a professional, enthusiastic, compassionate Recreation Aide to join our team. Reporting to the Director of Recreation, the Recreation Aide is responsible for providing recreation activities for individuals with disabilities or illnesses using a variety of techniques. Improve and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the resident. Help individuals reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively. They carry out recreational interventions consistent with the residents' needs and interests as directed by the Director.
Duties include (but not limited to)

Plan and perform group and one to one activities, meeting the needs of each resident and encourages participation.

Ensure each resident’s physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, and sensory emotional needs are met through independent activities or group in accordance with Director’s direction.

Encourage residents who are isolated from others or who have limited social skills to have recreational interaction with others.

Assists in developing and updating the recreational interventions addressing the needs of the residents.

Encourage residents to continue independent activities.

Observe and document the individual resident attendance, participation, reactions, and progress.

Instruct residents in relaxation techniques to reduce stress and tension, stretching and limbering exercises, proper body mechanics for participation in recreational activities, pacing and energy conservation techniques, and team activities.

Use interventions to develop specific skills, while providing opportunities for exercise, mental stimulation, creativity, and fun.
Qualifications
- Completion of Recreation & Leisure, Therapeutic Recreation, or an appropriate related field as per the requirements of the Long-Term Care Homes Act and Regulations.
- Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of a TB test (skin test of clear chest x-ray), and a minimum of 2 doses of COVID vaccine
- Current CPR (preferred)
- Additional training in the following areas would be an asset: DementiAbility Training, GPA, Person-Centered care, education in relation to working with clients with dementia/responsive behaviours, palliative education.

Additionally, we are the first DementiAbility certified home in southwestern Ontario. DementiAbility is an evidence-based model of care which, through a variety of harmonized approaches, is designed to create a positive, meaningful experience for those living with dementia that is based on their individual strengths, abilities and potential. Braemar’s success in the implementation of these programs has provided us the opportunity to participate and present in multiple forums, allowing us to be part of driving positive change in the Long Term Care Sector.
