Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Location: Menihek, NL
Rotation and Shift: 2 Weeks on / 2 Weeks off (Remote Camp Location)

As part of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro’s improvement program at it’s Menihek Generating Station, Grey Rock Services Inc. has been awarded work, to complete different scopes associated with these efforts. Our current work scopes include upgrades to the Menihek reservoir (2025 – 2026) and the installation of water/sewer systems to support its newly constructed camp.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Supervisor or Superintendent, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for placing armor stone and rip rap on reservoir dykes, backfilling, digging, spreading gravel, trenching, loading trucks and hauling and dumping material in a safe and effective manner. The Heavy Equipment Operator is also responsible for inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining the equipment and performing repairs as required.
- Backfilling, digging, gravel spreading, trenching, and loading trucks
- Operating heavy equipment to lift and move bulk materials at the worksite
- Grade various parts of the worksite to the designed elevation in a timely manner
- Ability to understand rough or fine grade finishing along with road construction plans
- Responsible for understanding issues involving ground disturbance
- Operating equipment and attachments in a smooth and safe manner
- Perform and document daily safety and maintenance checks
- Repair and maintain vehicle in good condition
- Advise the Supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
- Be aware of surroundings at all times
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task
- Protect and promote the interest of this company in all matters and to take actions as required to satisfy such responsibilities
- Ensure safety of fellow employees
- Perform other duties as assigned
Health, Safety and Environment Responsibilities:
- Adhere to local and externally relevant health and safety regulations and policies
- Adhere to the company’s and client’s HSE system - comply with all safety policies and procedures
- Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
- Lead by example. Wear PPE & seatbelts, observe road rules, etc.
- Participate in investigation of incidents as appropriate
- Working safely is a condition of employment
- Ensure the safety of fellow workers
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:
Mandatory requirement – applicants must have of the following core competencies:
- Excavator operator – competent in the operation of excavators (including those in 50-tonne class or higher) as evidenced by a minimum of 8 years of experience in applications requiring use of machine control, fine grade work and finishing
- Rock truck operator - competent in the operation of rock trucks (including articulated trucks such as the Komatsu HM-400) as evidenced by a minimum of 8 years’ experience in an industrial setting
- Other relevant competencies – the following applicant competencies will also be taken into consideration in the selection of successful candidates:
- Road tractor operation experience, including heavy equipment floating experience
- Loader operation experience in loaders greater or equal to Cat 966
- Operators must be capable and willing and able to operate the various types of Heavy Equipment for which they are qualified to operate
- Must be well versed in construction site protocols, rules and codes of conduct
- Willingness to work in a team environment
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that projects are completed properly
Other:
- The Heavy Equipment Operator will be part of a small crew with diverse duties. The operator will assist the crew with manual tasks when available.
- Applicants must possess a valid traction engine license
- References from previous work experience cited on resumes may be requested
- All applicants must successfully pass competency assessment program
Working Conditions:
The Heavy Equipment Operator role may include physically strenuous activities. The Heavy Equipment Operator will be lifting, pulling and managing heavy equipment and objects, requiring the use of PPE such as hardhats, steel toe boots, and reflective vests to minimize risk on the worksite. The worksite environment for this position is outside in varying weather conditions.
