The company operates a 100,000 sq. ft. facility with 24 molding machines, running 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Focus of position

As a Mold Maker, you will be responsible for the repair, improvement, and maintenance of plastic injection molds. Your main function is to support production by completing work within the demands of the regular production schedule. Perform regular scheduled preventive maintenance on tooling. Capable of machining components to tight tolerances. Fully understands the principles and construction of plastic injection molds and is capable of in press repairs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance on plastic injection molds and hot runner systems, including disassembly, cleaning, inspecting for damage or wear, completing repairs and re-assembly.
  • Fabricate mold inserts, mold components, fixture and tooling with and without engineering prints and 3-D CAD molds using milling, turning, grinding, EDM machines.
  • Fits and assembles parts and tests completed molds for proper operation.
  • Support production team members to ensure proper quality output and safe operations.
  • Verifies conformance of repaired injection molds or related tooling to specification by checking dimensions, clearances and alignments using various test equipment, consistently working to close tolerances.
  • Operates overhead crane to remove and/or relocate molds to specific workstations/areas.
  • Completes computer data entry as necessary.
  • Maintains a neat work area and cleans up during and at the end of his or her shift. Provides general maintenance and cleanup of all Tool room equipment.
  • Must be able to operate all common tool room machinery in a safe and productive manner.
  • Use of CAD/CAM systems and computer systems.
  • Must be able to provide technical knowledge on mold repairs.
  • Must possess good problem-solving skills to properly repair tools and fixtures.
  • Welding repairs are needed.
  • Familiar with hot runner function basic maintenance and troubleshooting techniques, like cleaning, removal, and reworking, as well as basic electrical troubleshooting of probes, heaters, thermal couplers, and manifolds.
  • Preventive Maintenance on all press room equipment.
  • Help the Maintenance department with special projects.
  • Understand the importance of health and safety at work and can follow instructions.
  • Design and build gauges to check accuracy of parts
  • Perform in-press troubleshooting
  • Resolve die performance issues
  • Resolve mold/dies safety issues
  • Resolve mold/dies performance issues
  • When required, produce products, at times with few or no prints as a repair function.
  • Support research and development efforts to design and manufacture new products
  • Maintain daily records of work performed
  • Update tool room schedule as needed with minimal direction from supervisor
  • Conduct, maintain and report inventory of mold, dies and shop supplies, punches, springs

Education and Experience:

  • Licensed Mold Maker (431A) certification required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a journeyman in mold making and injection molding
  • Proficiency in operating common tool room machinery (safe and productive)
  • Experience with CAD/CAM systems and computer systems is an asset
  • Technical knowledge of mold repairs and troubleshooting
  • TIG welding skills are preferred
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance systems and hot runner applications (including valve gate systems) is recommended
  • Overhead crane and forklift certifications
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift and move loads over 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
