Mount Royal University’s Faculty of Continuing Education has provided high quality education to the Calgary community and beyond for more than 75 years. Serving more than 30,000 students per year, we offer a suite of Ministry of Advanced Education-approved programs (occupational programs in massage, personal fitness trainer and funeral education; academic upgrading; and our Transitional Vocational Programming), over 60 programs and 350+ courses to support professional and personal development in a wide range of topics, and our Conservatory (which offers a broad range of music and speech arts programming). Our courses cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to business, technology and health. These courses are offered in a variety of formats on campus, online, in the workplace, and in the community.

Course Description: Practice the foundational skills required of massage therapists including draping, bolstering, positioning, informed consent, communication, self-care, body mechanics, and ergonomics. Be introduced to client assistance and transfer skills.
Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- utilize written and oral communication effectively
- communicate in a manner that respects diversity
- communicate in a manner that is suitable to the client’s level of understanding
- utilize active listening skills
- utilize and respond to non-verbal communication
- utilize medical terminology
- contribute to an effective, collaborative atmosphere in group settings
- interact professionally with others
- maintain professional boundaries
- apply standard hygiene and infection control precautions
- maintain professional decorum
- apply biomechanical and postural skills for therapist self-protection
- employ personal care and lifestyle strategies that enhance professional effectiveness
- manage personal stress
- maintain personal hygiene and professional appearance
- employ critical thinking
- apply ethical considerations in decision making
- manage professional time effectively
- practice within therapist’s knowledge and skill level
- utilize self-reflection to identify personal strengths and areas for improvement

This blended course has an online lecture and in-person components. The instructor will use the approved curriculum; implementation of applicable curriculum assessment measures; marking and submitting final course grades. The instructor will also be required to maintain regular contact with the administration team and adhere to university policies and deadlines.

- Lesson preparation (record video lectures etc.)
- Course delivery
- Marking/grading
- Course outline preparation
- Facilitate course delivery using approved curriculum and learning materials
- Review and revision of course assessments
- An online instructor is required to access the course daily; however, there are no predetermined times of the day an instructor is required to be online. Online instructors must have reliable internet service throughout the entire period of the course.
- Reply to students within 24-48 hours.
Administration:

Marking and submission of course grades

Maintain regular contact with the program administrative team

Participate in virtual instructor meetings and individual meetings with the program coordinator as required

Participate in meetings and adhere to university policies and deadlines
Qualifications

Post-secondary credential in a related field

Proficient understanding of the Inter-Jurisdictional Practice Competencies and Performance Indicators for Massage Therapists at Entry-to-Practice.

Working knowledge of copyright and APA citation

Excellent communication skills

Experience with accreditation

Instructional experience in an adult education environment is an asset
