Position Summary:
The Athletic Centre Assistant aids in the operation of the George Brown College Athletic Centre by providing support to the Athletic Facilities Coordinator and Manager, Athletics & Recreation. This position delivers front line service for students, staff, alumni, and community members using the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assists with the delivery of high-quality George Brown College Athletics & Recreation programs to students, staff, and community members.
- Monitors access into the facility by registering and verifying memberships, dispenses equipment, administers lockers.
- Interacts with customers to ensure recreational programming meets customer expectations and service standards; includes answering general facility inquiries, leading orientation groups, providing facility tours.
- Performs final rounds and lock-up of facility, according to standard operating procedure.
- Provides recreational, varsity, & rental set-up and take-down services while maintaining a safe and clean facility.
- Maintains inventory of various supplies and equipment and reports general maintenance requirements to Coordinator.
- In absence of the Coordinator, assumes a lead role in maintaining the general operations of the facility ensuring workflow and appropriate coverage, acting as a primary point of contact in emergency situations, and reporting all action taken to the Coordinator.
- Assists Coordinator and Manager with student-staff oversight, task assignments, scheduling, reporting disciplinary issues, and evaluation of staff training needs.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Must have a high school Diploma. A Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Recreation and Leisure or Sports Management is considered an asset.
- Two (2) years of experience in a community centre or athletic centre setting required.
- Supervisory experience in customer service setting; community centre or athletic centre setting an asset.
- Must have Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
Skills and Attributes:
- Sound conflict management skills and ability to deal calmly with angry or upset individuals.
- High level of customer service skills, including problem-solving and capacity to exercise good judgment and initiative.
- Can participate effectively within a team and has a high understanding of diversity and equity issues.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and proficient in MS Office.
- Valid Ontario non-probationary Class G driver’s license is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated collaboration and interpersonal skills at a professional level.
- Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.
Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.

- The College requires proof of degrees, credentials or equivalencies from accredited regional or federal post-secondary institutions and/or their international equivalents. Credentials may require validation at the time of interviews or offer.
- Priority will be given to internal candidates per our Part-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement. External candidates are welcome to apply, and their applications will be considered after the internal review is complete.
