Job Description The Marketing and Communications Specialist contributes to the creative development of key communications projects and assets for The Salvation Army. This role involves a wide range of marketing, content creation, and communications tasks that support the mission of the organization. It may also include responsibilities such as image creation, videography, and design to strengthen visual storytelling. The specialist plays an important part in ensuring consistent, engaging messaging across various platforms to effectively reach the community.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identifies and enhances marketing efforts to strengthen The Salvation Army’s image, distributing creative assets and supporting regional content to raise awareness.
  • Contributes to and executes tactical media plans using various media options to achieve marketing objectives.
  • Develops and publishes content across articles, social media, websites, video scripts, and donor/stakeholder materials while maintaining the editorial calendar.
  • Proofreads and edits content for accessibility compliance, curates and uploads images, and coordinates interviews to highlight The Salvation Army’s impact.
  • Manages and monitors social media accounts to engage the public, support campaigns, and report on monthly performance and audience engagement.
  • Develops and maintains a content calendar for social media, posting updates aligned with key themes, corporate partnerships, and national campaigns.
  • Supports live event coverage through social media, collaborates across departments to manage reputation, and ensures legal requirements and brand standards are met.
  • Assists in creative content design by adhering to brand guidelines, managing equipment, ensuring model release compliance, and supporting projects through all stages.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education And Experience Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or other related discipline.
  • Three to five years related public relations/writing/communications/web/social media experience in an organizational setting, with previous non-profit experience an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of social media best practices, KPIs, SEO, and web traffic metrics.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple social media accounts creatively and accurately.
  • Skilled in storytelling across diverse social media post types and tactics.
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, WordPress, Hootsuite, and quick to learn new applications.
  • Knowledge of design applications is an asset.
  • Strong project coordination skills with flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong English writing for print and online.
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment to meet tight deadlines while taking initiative.
  • Flexible to work outside regular hours, available on short notice, willing to travel, and committed to The Salvation Army’s mission and values.

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $47,057.64 to $58,822.05 with a maximum of $70,586.46.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
