Primary Purpose

UCW Tutor will primarily work remotely, with occasional on-campus presence and will play a crucial role in providing academic support to students by offering guidance, clarification, and effective learning strategies. This role presents an opportunity for personal and professional growth while making a meaningful impact on the academic success of peers.

Specific Responsibilities

The Library/Learning Commons Student Assistant will at various times be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the Company:

  • Providing accurate and insightful guidance in understanding course materials, reinforcing study strategies, and promoting effective learning techniques and tailoring your approach to accommodate students’ learning styles.
  • Attending paid training sessions at the beginning and/or during the term to engage with trainers and training material. These training sessions will be provided to ensure tutors are equipped with the necessary skills before tutoring students.
  • Updating availability on MS Bookings, allowing students to schedule appointments conveniently. Committing a consistent availability of 15 hours spread over four days each week. Additional attendance at training sessions and occasional meetings may be required.
  • Thoroughly reviewing course syllabi and materials to uphold an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, facilitating effective tutoring sessions.
  • Recommending relevant learning resources and academic tools that can aid students in their studies.
  • Collaborating with professors to identify students needing tutoring, understanding their specific needs, and offering tailored solutions to enhance their learning experience.
  • Engaging in the introduction/promotion of UCW Tutoring Program through both in-class and online platforms.
  • Ensuring clear and professional communication with students, faculty, assigned lead, and the Learning Commons department while maintaining a response time of 48 business hours for all communications. Keeping informed of any changes in the operations by actively checking emails/relevant communication channels and following all the procedures, ensuring alignment with the most current information.

Position Requirements

Competencies:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise manner.
  • Empathetic and patient approach to working with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Embracing individual and cultural differences, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment.
  • Advanced working knowledge of MS Office, specifically Outlook, and Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
  • Demonstrated dedication to assisting peers, and delivering support that is efficient, effective, and reliable.
  • Reliable, punctual, and responsible in fulfilling tutoring commitments.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Prior tutoring, teaching, or mentoring experience is a plus but not required.

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of the relevant course(s) with grades of A and above at University Canada West.
  • Must have a strong academic standing as a current student or alumni of University Canada West.
  • Submission of two references from UCW professors who can provide insights into your academic achievements and contributions.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the software applications used in specific courses at UCW is required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed and earned an A grade in marketing electives such as MGMT 641 and 642 .
