Key Responsibilities

As the Private Business Tax Manager – Public Practice , you will play a central role in reviewing, managing, and enhancing tax audit processes for private business clients. Your responsibilities will include:

Tax Audit & Assurance:

  • Lead and manage tax audit engagements for privately owned businesses to ensure compliance with federal and provincial tax laws.
  • Assess and review corporate tax filings for completeness, accuracy, and audit readiness.
  • Identify tax risk exposures, documentation gaps, and reporting issues; provide recommendations for process and control improvements.
  • Coordinate with internal audit and financial reporting teams to ensure consistent, accurate tax reporting.

Tax Risk Management & Compliance:

  • Analyze financial records and supporting documentation to validate tax positions taken by clients.
  • Provide guidance on audit defense strategies and help clients respond to tax authority inquiries or reassessments.
  • Stay current on CRA audit practices and shifting tax legislation to advise clients proactively.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Serve as a tax compliance advisor to private business owners and executives, offering clear insights into audit outcomes and implications.
  • Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with clients through regular updates, guidance, and transparent communication.

Team Leadership & Training:

  • Supervise and mentor junior professionals involved in tax audit support, reviewing work and fostering skill development.
  • Promote knowledge-sharing and best practices across the team to elevate audit quality and efficiency.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • CPA designation required, with a specialization in tax or audit preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in tax compliance or tax audit within public practice or professional services.
  • Familiarity with private company structures, owner-managed businesses, and industry-specific compliance issues is an asset.

Technical Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian tax laws, audit procedures, and CRA audit frameworks.
  • Strong proficiency in tax software and audit analytics tools.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial data and tax documents with accuracy and insight.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially when explaining audit outcomes or compliance risks.
  • Strong critical thinking and investigative skills.
  • A detail-oriented mindset with a focus on quality, accuracy, and client service.
