About Us

The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is responsible for overseeing Saskatchewan’s correctional systems and facilities and provides guidance and support to Saskatchewan’s municipal police service. The ministry pursues a fair justice system that upholds the law and protects the rights of all individuals in Saskatchewan, promotes safe and secure communities, and provides legal and justice policy advice to assist the government.

The Custody Services Division is responsible for the implementation and operation of adult and youth offender services in Saskatchewan as defined by The Correctional Services Act, 2012 and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. These services include assistance to the courts in their pre-trial or pre-sentence decision-making, the provision of a range of custody, supervision and program services for persons sentenced or remanded by the courts, and the development and provision of a wide range of other correctional programs and services that promote safe and secure communities.

Saskatchewan adult custody facilities house upwards of 2400 offenders with a budget of approximately $195 million dollars with 2000 employees.

The Opportunity

The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is currently hiring for the Director of Adult Custody Services within the Custody Services branch. This position will play a key role in ensuring the implementation of strategies and actions that will be aligned with and facilitate the achievement of objectives under the ministry and division’s action plans. The institutional side of adult corrections is a very large and complex organization with the primary responsibility of providing a safe and secure environment for offenders and staff in mind of community safety. The candidate will be committed to the pursuit of excellence, exhibit high level leadership and professionalism, embrace diversity and equality and be responsible, respectable, and accountable.

The Director of Adult Custody Services will lend both experience and expertise in supporting the Executive Director of Custody Services.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Custody Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading, coaching, and mentoring senior management teams in Saskatchewan Adult Custody facilities in support of the ministry’s strategic plan for ensuring Safe Facilities, Safe Communities and Safe and Engaged Workplaces;
  • Ensuring the efficient and effective management of financial material;
  • Analyzing existing structures and policies for efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Having significant knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system;
  • Understanding and supporting current research-based approaches for addressing the criminogenic needs of offenders; and
  • Collaborating with other Custody Services staff, the ministry, and community partners.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this role will be someone who has:

  • Proven leadership experience in a senior management role;
  • Experience promoting employee engagement and a positive workplace culture;
  • The ability to demonstrate our core values with accountability and professionalism by always acting with honesty and integrity while treating everyone with dignity and respect;
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with, and influence, a variety of stakeholders;
  • The demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues and information;
  • The ability to seek opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement while actively involving colleagues; and
  • The ability to collaborate with Custody Services employees to provide offenders with professional and ethical services for their safety and security, and offer services to strengthen their ability to live, work and contribute to their community.

Typically, the knowledge and experience for this position were obtained through a combination of:

  • Related education or training in social science or related discipline;
  • Demonstrated senior leadership experience in a correctional environment; and
  • Significant knowledge of the adult custody correctional system.
