Associate Dean - Faculty of Arts
Top Benefits
About the role
The Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts, will be an academic and administrative officer charged by the Dean with a diverse and variable scope of responsibilities. While responsibilities will shift to reflect the different cycles of work and activity in the Dean’s Office, there will be two fixed components. These include, first, matters of academic administration: academic petitions and approvals, credit recognition, student progress and advising, and academic integrity processes and initiatives. Secondly, the Associate Dean will collaborate with the Dean to advance initiatives in support of student persistence, retention, and quality student experience.
The Associate Dean will serve as Acting Dean during the Dean’s absence and, on occasion, may be requested to represent the Dean’s Office or Faculty of Arts to campus committees, councils, and events, and to broader communities at the municipal, provincial, regional, national, or international levels.
The appointment will be for a three-year term (2025-2028), with the possibility of renewal for an additional three years. There is a two-course reduction in teaching load provided with backfill to the affected department, and a modest administrative stipend. The successful candidate will be asked to defer sabbatical leave during the term of appointment. They will be expected to work irregular hours in fulfillment of responsibilities and to be present on campus and available to students during regular work hours.
Qualifications:
The Associate Dean should be a tenured faculty member from within the Faculty of Arts. Over the course of their career, the Associate Dean will have demonstrated a commitment to improving the Faculty of Arts and particularly to the student experience therein.
The Associate Dean should have successful administrative experience, potentially as a Department Chair, Coordinator of an interdisciplinary program, or a strong record of committee leadership roles with demonstrable results at UPEI or beyond. They will have proven themself as an efficient and organized administrator who exercises their responsibilities in accordance with policy, procedures, and regulations, and guided by compassion.
The Associate Dean should have extensive practice in student advising and mentoring, broadly conceived. In this practice, they will have exercised very good judgement and established consistent, impenetrable professional boundaries with students.
Because the Associate Dean will be working with the University’s academic policies and procedures, and with student engagement initiatives, they should have a collegial approach with staff in the Faculty of Arts, Student Accounts, the Registrar’s Office, and the various departments aligned with student services. Additionally, they should have positive, professional working relationships with faculty colleagues.
The Associate Dean will have a demonstrable history of commitment to and engagement with the principles of EDI and Reconciliation.
Broad Responsibilities:
The Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts, will:
- Work closely with the Dean and Administrative Assistant on day-to-day matters regarding the administration of the Faculty of Arts, particularly though not exclusively student-facing matters.
- Develop and coordinate efforts, initiatives, and events to support student engagement and foster student persistence.
- Coordinate academic integrity educational initiatives and manage processes concerning academic appeals at the Faculty-level.
- Manage, review and respond to various solicitations under academic policies, such as transfer credit recognition, course overload petitions, incomplete extensions, grade changes, etc.
- Complete variable responsibilities, as assigned.
