Manager - Tax & Finance
Spartan is seeking an individual to fulfill the responsibilities of a Manager - Finance & Tax to join the Finance & Accounting team. This role is primarily responsible to assist the Vice President - Finance & CFO with respect to finance, reporting, and tax matters. This role is a “go-to” resource who provides guidance and financial leadership for the finance group and across departments. This is a 12 to 15-month, full-time temporary, in-office position based in Calgary.
What You Will Do
- Lead the finance and tax function, preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), and other essential financial reports.
- Conduct in-depth review and analysis of financial data to ensure the accurate and timely communication of results, while ensuring full compliance with public company reporting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Follow robust internal controls over financial reporting, working collaboratively with accounting and senior leadership to identify opportunities for process enhancements and risk mitigation. Implement corrective actions to remediate identified deficiencies.
- Oversee the preparation and review of corporate income tax returns, GST filings, and other tax-related documentation, ensuring accurate and timely submission. Develops and executes comprehensive tax strategies aligned with corporate goals and monitors evolving tax legislation to ensure continued compliance. Manage interactions with tax authorities, including CRA audits.
- Assist with the management of Treasury and contributes to various ad hoc financial projects, providing strategic input as necessary.
- Collaborate with the finance team, fostering a culture of high performance and engagement. Promote the adoption of best practices while imparting expertise in taxation, accounting, and corporate finance.
- Research and analyze IFRS accounting standards applicable to company transactions and prepare accounting memos.
- Coordinate with external auditors to facilitate the smooth and efficient completion of audits, ensuring the delivery of necessary financial information and addressing any audit inquiries promptly.
Who You Are
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with CPA designation.
- A minimum of 10 years of post-designation experience in relevant positions, including at least 5 years in a management role.
- Extensive knowledge in corporate tax and public company financial reporting.
- Previous experience in the oil and gas industry or natural resources sector.
- Experience in auditing at a public accounting firm is considered an asset.
- Experience with corporate income tax compliance and provision, including consolidated tax filings.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge of IFRS.
- Strong interpersonal skills with experience collaborating cross-functionally with departments such as accounting, finance, operations, and treasury.
- Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling, reconciliation, and data analysis.

This is a 12 to 15-month, full-time temporary position. There is the option for an hourly consulting contract, or a salaried contract position with paid vacation time off and potential for benefits to be discussed.
