The Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources’ Saskatchewan Geological Survey Branch (SGS) is responsible for investigating, managing, and distributing information on the geology, and mineral and petroleum resources of the province. SGS has an exciting and challenging opportunity in our Regina office for a highly motivated and committed Geophysicist with excellent interpersonal, cooperative and leadership skills.
SGS is seeking a candidate that is knowledgeable in safely planning and executing modern geophysical surveys, as well as processing and analyzing the acquired data. The successful candidate will undertake research projects using advanced geophysical interpretative techniques, such as inversions of potential field data, to assist in the development of geoscience models at a variety of scales while working in close collaboration with the SGS geoscience and data-management teams. You will make your research results available through timely preparation of technical reports, maps, 3D models and presentations. The ability to collate large data sets, familiarity with modelling in the 3D environment, and programming skills that could aid in predictive modelling, are all assets. The successful candidate will contribute to an environment that recognizes, supports, respects, and welcomes diversity of employees and stakeholders.
We are seeking an innovative forward thinker who can effectively manage and organize resources, deal with changing priorities and tight deadlines, has the ability to work independently and, as a contributing and supportive team member, to complete assignments and achieve common goals. The successful candidate will require a Master of Science degree with acceptable specialization in geophysics, relevant work experience and be registered (or eligible for registration) in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan.
The successful candidate will possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to fulfill the following primary responsibilities of this position:
- Ability to plan surveys, acquire, organize, analyze geophysical data and evaluate its veracity;
- Knowledge of the physical properties of rocks and minerals, and the geophysical signatures of structural trends, alteration footprints and mineral deposits;
- Skills to process and level raw electromagnetic, magnetic, gravity and radiometric data;
- Skills to utilize geophysical data processing methods such as derivative-based, analytic signal, anomaly detection, edge detection, and source depth estimation methods;
- Knowledge of statistical analysis methods to interpret and derive insights from geophysical data to help explain defined, speculative and unknown geological features;
- Skills to integrate geophysical data and/or a basic understanding of programming with other geoscience information to generate innovative, interpretive products;
- Ability to effectively work with software packages including Geosoft and ArcGIS/QGIS to create and edit databases and maps;
- Skills to collaborate with Remotely Piloted Airborne Systems (RPAS) pilots to acquire and process airborne data from a variety of tools;
- Skills to create 2D/3D geophysical models through inversion of gravity, magnetic and EM data using appropriate software packages such as LeapFrog or GOCAD;
- Ability to write reports and present findings to technical and non-technical audiences;
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, productive work relationships with colleagues and a variety of stakeholders;
- Ability to effectively manage and organize resources, deal with changing priorities and tight deadlines to meet the Saskatchewan Geological Survey’s strategic objectives.
- Knowledge of, and experience using, machine learning techniques to generate resource prospectivity maps from geoscience data is an asset.
