About the role

The Halifax Regional Municipality Pension Plan (HRM Pension Plan) has ~$3.3 billion in assets under management, of which ~$880 million is invested in real assets (real estate and infrastructure). The Plan is an institutional investor that commits capital via primary funds, co investments and secondary transactions. Sourcing and executing on real assets investments require them to work in close collaboration both internally and with the full ecosystem of providers globally to help build this portfolio.

At HRM Pension Plan, you will join a small team of professionals dedicated to understanding, parsing and building portfolios in this ecosystem to deliver on a set of objectives that contributes to the success of the overall pension plan. This role is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and reports to the Associate Portfolio Manager, Real Assets.

What You’ll be Doing

As Investment Associate, you will be an active member of their investment team assisting with all aspects of the investing and monitoring process, including fund manager, industry, sector and valuation analysis, transaction and legal due diligence, preparing financial models and investment recommendation memos, post investment monitoring initiatives, as well as general investment research.

Regular responsibilities include:

  • Perform preliminary research and due diligence on new investment opportunities across real estate and infrastructure, and assist in the creation of investment memos and financial models that form the basis of investment decisions.
  • Participate in due diligence on new investments, including the identification of key investment merits and risks, performing valuation analysis, building & reviewing financial models, and assisting with legal and tax reviews.
  • Track existing real estate and infrastructure investments by undertaking various analyses on portfolio performance, monitoring financial and operating results, and over time, interacting directly with investment partners.
  • Assist with various projects relating to the Plan's other investments.
  • Perform other administrative tasks as required.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong academic background, ideally holding a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related quantitative discipline. While candidates with degrees in other fields will also be considered, they should be able to demonstrate the necessary technical aptitude for the role. This opportunity is open to both new graduates and individuals with a few years of relevant experience.

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills, which are essential for working collaboratively within our team and building relationships with external partners. A strong interest in pursuing professional designations such as the CFA or CAIA is highly valued, and the Pension Plan is committed to supporting ongoing education and credentialing.

We are seeking someone with a high level of personal commitment, intellectual curiosity about investing, and the ability to produce high-quality work with minimal supervision. A proactive mindset, strong sense of ownership, and initiative are key to thriving in this role. In return, candidates can expect challenging and rewarding work in a dynamic environment with ample opportunities for growth and development as a well-rounded investor.

At Venor and HRM Pension Plan, we embrace a culture of belonging in the workplace. No matter who you are, where you’re from, how you think, what you believe in, or who you love, we welcome your application. We all come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, bringing in unique perspectives and experiences. We encourage applications from 2SLGBTQ+, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), women, newcomers to Canada, and people with disabilities. If you require any accommodation in the application and interview process, please let us know (including different materials or otherwise).
