Job Description:
The Audio Visual Maintenance Technician supports the efficient operation of AV systems and equipment across the College and at satellite campus location(s). This includes presentation systems in classrooms, meeting rooms, and auditoriums, Nursing simulation systems, video conferencing systems, theatre lighting control systems, and centralised digital signage. The Technician is required to install, maintain, and support a wide range of professional audio, video, and control equipment and systems. As delegated by the supervisor, this position executes a variety of projects and tasks. This position also delegates tasks and provides directions to junior team members in resolving routine technical issues.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Installs and maintains AV systems and equipment:
- Installs AV equipment and systems: mounting projectors and displays, building equipment racks, assembling components, terminating various connectors, pulling cables, and etc;
- Programs and configures presentation systems and components including touch panels, control processors, scaling switchers, wireless collaboration devices, and audio DSPs;
- Commissions and tests AV systems, ensures that installed equipment and system performance adhere to internal and applicable industry standards;
- Optimises equipment and systems for minimal downtime;
- Proactively monitors deployed systems and equipment;
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance, deploys firmware and programming updates for AV equipment and systems;
- Troubleshoots and repairs malfunctioning College owned AV equipment, coordinates equipment repairs and replacements as needed;
- Decommissions and properly disposes of EOL/EOS and surplus equipment;
- Follows WHMIS and OH&S practices, ensures that equipment is safely installed within provisions of relevant regulations;
- Works with various IT teams, College departments, trades, and contractors on the installation and maintenance of College AV equipment and systems.
- Provides technical support to clients on audio visual related requests:
- Diagnoses, troubleshoots and resolves technical issues related to video displays, projectors, control automation systems, video conferencing, sound re-enforcement, computer peripherals and other presentation technologies;
- Acts as an escalation point for advanced support requests;
- Prioritises, tracks, and updates incidents and requests using an IT Service Management system on a regular basis to reflect current information and status;
- Follows established client support procedures; works directly with users to troubleshoot AV issues; follows up to ensure timely resolutions;
- Works with technical personnel within IT and other College departments to resolve Service Desk tickets and support AV infrastructure;
- Provides assistance to junior personnel and in other areas as directed;
- Answers technical or practical questions relating to the use of technology;
- Provides training to users on AV presentation technologies.
- Performs an important role in the successful delivery of projects:
- In consultation with the supervisor and the IT management team, plans, prioritises and executes projects of various complexities, including classroom upgrades, equipment replacement, system standardisation, and deployment of technologies in new or renovated facilities;
- As directed by the supervisor, follows standard AV project management process to ensure timely completion of projects and that operational and performance requirements are met;
- Works with stakeholders to maintain client satisfaction;
- Assists in the design of AV systems according to client and budget requirements;
- Assists in developing long-term strategies and capacity planning for meeting future educational technology needs;
- Collaborates with IT management to establish and implement AV related practices and procedures;
- Provides regular status updates on projects and tasks.
- Creates and maintains documentation and records:
- Develops content for training manuals and instructional guides for users and internal teams;
- Works with the supervisor to establish and maintain standards; provides recommendations in developing technical standards, specifications and guidelines.
- Maintains inventory records on applicable AV and IT assets;
- Provides and maintains documentation on ongoing projects; ensures that documentation, including system diagrams and deficiency reports, on existing systems are up-to-date;
- Follows a knowledge centered support approach, creates and maintains knowledge articles on the knowledge management database;
- Collects data on AV related issues; evaluates documented resolutions and analyses emerging trends to preempt future problems.
- Performs other related duties in the following areas, as directed:
- Prototypes and evaluates new equipment and systems for demonstration and future deployment;
- Researches and recommends capital and operational purchases;
- Maintains an inventory of spare parts and consumables, places orders as needed;
- Provides recommendations to workflows and escalation procedures;
- Maintains appropriate professional designations and knowledge of current AV and IT trends and developments, by various methods including attending seminars, conferences, and taking specialised training;
- Attends staff meetings, project meetings, and other ad hoc meetings as needed;
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with peers and contacts with access to information and to key business partners;
- Handles sensitive information pertaining to network and system security with discretion;
- Monitors and trains junior team members in absence of senior team members.
Qualifications Required:
Education Requirements
- Successful completion of a relevant two-year diploma or Grade 12 plus additional specialized training of over 2 years.
- Four (4) years of recent related experience in audio visual system maintenance and integration, and providing technical and instructional support to users.
- Successful completion of the Extron Control Specialist certification program.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Extensive experience with AV system design, installation, configuration, programming, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance.
- Experience with analysing and interpreting electronic and architectural drawings and diagrams.
- Knowledge of IT network standards, protocols, topologies, and networking hardware applicable to the deployment of AV control system.
- Knowledge of current industry standards (e.g. ANSI, AVIXA) and best practices.
- Knowledge of both PC and Mac hardware and software, with proficiency in office, graphics editing and drafting applications including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, MS Visio.
- Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Desirable Assets
- InfoComm Certified Technology Specialist (CTS).
- ITIL Foundation Certification.
- Other relevant industry recognised credentials from Extron, Crestron, Biamp, Panasonic, InfoComm and etc.
- Knowledge of and experience with IT ticketing and knowledge management applications required for providing user support.
- Knowledge of and experience with collaboration applications required for team communication, including O365 and Slack.
- Knowledge of and experience in UX, interaction design, or graphic design.
- Knowledge of and experience with high-level programming language (e.g. Python).

- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with an ability to express complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical individuals.

Working Conditions
- Candidate must be able to perform physically demanding tasks on a frequent basis, including climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, lifting and/or carrying equipment up to 25 kg.

- Ability to work flexible hours during early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Overtime may be required to meet deadlines.
