About the role
The Senior Benefits Consultant is responsible for the overall relationship of a block of clients, including strategic consulting advice, service delivery, financial management, plan design, pricing strategies, analyzing trends, negotiating renewals, and benchmarking.
The Senior Benefits Consultant will:
- Analyze current benefit plans and understand or develop the strategies of the client
- Provide clients with recommendations for plan changes and enhancements with rationale and documented impact
- Communicate complex benefit concepts in a straightforward and understandable way
- Maintain and apply knowledge of the healthcare regulations and benefit trends
- Use foresight of future legislation and trends to recommend proactive changes to benefit plans
- Negotiate benefit contracts, premium schedules and coverages with insurers and applicable vendors/suppliers
- Prepare and/or review benefit communications such as benefit booklets, newsletters, announcements
- Present plan details to membership in scheduled member seminars
- Present benefit plan options to clients (and their members if applicable)
- Maintain knowledge of self-funded benefit rules and calculate reserves and premium allocation rates
- Work collaboratively with benefit administrators to ensure smooth plan implementations and administration delivery of benefit services and solutions
- Ensure communication with benefit plan administrators to implement rate changes
- Represent and advocate for the needs of the client across the organization, including vendor partners as needed
- Develop and recommend to senior management strategies and activities to support client satisfaction and retention
- Maintain positive relations with clients, including key decision-makers and administrators including periodically reaching out to see if the client has unmet needs
- Manage client expectations and effectively deal with concerns or issues
- Develop internal annual client plans to ensure clients are receiving value-added service and that deliverables align with client goals and objectives – share annual workplan with client in conjunction with other staff
- Prepare and deliver activity and service reports to clients as needed
- Accountable for revenue/profitability for client accounts and projects
- Identify creative opportunities for growth within the client block through multi-product selling and providing enhanced value through unique solution generation.
- Participate in continuing education to maintain a high level of knowledge of employee benefit legislation, administrative issues, plan rules, claim management, and client-specific procedures
- Obtain licensing and industry designations when available to enhance the Senior Benefit Consultant’s credibility in the industry and with clients
- Participate in industry conferences, seminars, etc. in order to promote services and keep abreast of industry trends and activities
- Represent McAteer and People Corporation in the market and be a successful brand ambassador
- Foster and develop positive supplier relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, shared services, practice areas, etc. across the organization
To be successful as a Senior Benefits Consultant, you will need:
- A minimum of 5 years in a carrier underwriting position
- Strong knowledge of underwriting practices
- Superior analytical and mathematical skills, strategic planning, communication, and listening skills
- To be a solution and results oriented individual who demonstrates excellent problem solving skills
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with MS 365 with high proficiency in Excel
- To be a strong, collaborative team player
- Strong attention to detail
All-Star candidates will have:
- Experience in a multi-employer environment
- LLQP license
- CEBS, GBA
- Fluency in French
