About the role

As a Material Science Co-op Student, you will work with Engineering staff from our Materials and Dimensional lab on the laboratory analysis of ferrous alloys, ensuring that production, prototype and purchased parts are within established specifications. Enthusiasts of material science are encouraged to apply.

Job Duties

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, standard work instructions, work specifications, and procedures
  • Section components; mount, polish and etch samples and analyze metallurgy; perform surface hardness and case depth analysis
  • Collect, record, document all data as required.
  • Setup, calibrate, and maintain all tools, equipment, systems, processes and machines which are used to perform work
  • Maintain, service, calibrate, repair, or create gauges and standards as required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Hands-on, creative, self-motivated, passionate person willing to take on diverse and challenging technical tasks.
  • Analysis tasks require collaboration with coworkers; effective communication and reasoning skills are essential when working on projects that involve multiple team members.
  • Ability to effectively present information to both internal and external individuals and groups.
  • Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of ASTM, CSA, AWS, ASME, API engineering codes is an asset.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Mechanical, Metallurgical or Materials Engineering Technologist diploma or Bachelor's degree program.
  • Knowledge of the microscopic evaluation of steel
  • Experience preparing samples of ferrous alloys
  • Familiarity with use of acids for micro and macro etching
  • Ability to operate Rockwell and micro-hardness testers
  • Strong verbal communication skills in English, excellent written communication skills in English.
