Senior Manager – Fractional Controllership & Advisory

Location:

Remote within Canada

Position Summary

At Ottit, our mission is to provide timely, accurate, and reliable accounting solutions—giving business owners clarity and confidence to focus on what matters most: their business. We’re expanding our Fractional Controllership & Advisory Practice , and we are seeking a seasoned and motivated Senior Manager to lead client engagements and help us shape this growing service area.

In this role, you will work directly with clients as a trusted advisor, managing financial operations and providing strategic insight. As a Senior Manager in this role you will have the opportunity to influence how we deliver client value, implement best-in-class processes, and scale a high-performing proportional controllership offering that reflects our firm’s values and standards.

What You'll Do

  • Manage all aspects of controllership for a portfolio of mid-sized business clients, including financial reporting, month-end close, reconciliations, and budgeting/forecasting.
  • Provide advisory support around financial systems, internal controls, cash flow management, and process improvements.
  • Deliver strategic guidance and insights to clients, acting as their fractional Controller or finance lead.
  • Oversee the utilization and optimization of accounting software (QBO, NetSuite, Xero, etc.).
  • Foster strong client relationships built on trust, proactive communication, and expert support.
  • Collaborate internally to define scalable processes and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Mentor junior team members and work closely with cross-functional leaders to deliver exceptional results.

Who You Are

You align naturally with our core values, and are energized by the opportunity to apply them:

  • Customer Centric & Service-Oriented – You consistently provide reliable, high-quality service and build enduring client relationships.
  • Efficient & Process-Driven – You are comfortable creating and following systems, and know how to streamline and scale work.
  • Solution-Oriented – You thrive on solving problems with a proactive, practical mindset.
  • Collaborative & Respectful – You bring a team-first approach and build positive working relationships.
  • A Continuous Improver & Expert – You challenge the status quo, seek better ways to do things, and take pride in delivering insight—not just reports.

Required Qualifications

  • CPA designation in good standing.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive public accounting experience, with at least 2+ years at the Manager level in a Big 4 or national CPA firm strongly preferred.
  • Deep technical knowledge of IFRS, ASPE, and US GAAP financial reporting, and controllership best practices.
  • Proven expertise managing and optimizing cloud-based accounting platforms such as QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, and Xero.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff or coordinating cross-functional teams.
  • Skilled at leveraging technology to streamline financial processes, enhance reporting accuracy, and improve operational efficiency across multiple client environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and oversee engagements independently.
  • History of building and maintaining trusted client relationships through excellent service delivery.
  • Strong understanding of internal control frameworks and best practices, including the ability to assess, design, and implement controls that safeguard assets, ensure accurate financial reporting, and support regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in inventory accounting, including costing methodologies (FIFO, weighted average, standard costing), inventory valuation, and reconciliation processes.
  • Familiarity with inventory management processes, systems, and software integrations.
  • Experience working across multiple clients or business units, with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Solid understanding of relevant regulatory and compliance requirements impacting accounting and reporting.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Public Accounting License (Ontario or other provincial regulatory body).
  • In-depth tax experience (e.g., T2 filings, owner-manager planning, reorganizations).
  • Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement certification.
  • Prior experience in a fractional CFO/Controller model or outsourced accounting environment.
  • Experience supporting businesses with inventory-heavy operations.

Why Join Us?

We’re more than an accounting firm—we’re a team of professionals who believe that clarity, accountability, and continuous improvement drive real value for our clients. Joining Ottit means becoming part of a collaborative and forward-thinking environment where your expertise is trusted, your ideas are welcomed, and your impact is visible.

  • You want to shape, not just execute. As a key hire in our Fractional Controllership & Advisory practice, you’ll play a key role in expanding our service line—bringing structure, insight, and leadership to a growing client base.
  • You thrive in client-facing roles. This isn’t a back-office position. You’ll work directly with business owners and leadership teams, acting as a trusted advisor and bringing clarity to their financial decision-making.
  • You value autonomy and ownership. We trust our senior team members to lead with confidence, make sound decisions, and take full responsibility for their work—without micromanagement.
  • You’re energized by improvement. Our culture is grounded in continuous improvement—of systems, processes, and people. If you see inefficiencies, we want you to fix them.
  • You want your work to matter. Your contributions here will be visible, valued, and impactful. You’ll play a critical role in helping clients grow, manage risk, and sleep better at night.

Why You Shouldn't Join Us

While we’re proud of the work we do and the clients we serve, we know our environment isn’t the right fit for everyone. You may want to reconsider applying if:

  • You prefer rigid structure over adaptability. We’re building a new service line, which means processes are evolving. If you need highly defined playbooks or fixed roles, this may feel uncomfortable.
  • You’re looking for back-office accounting only. This role is client-facing and strategic. If you prefer purely technical work without regular client interaction, it may not be a fit.
  • You need constant direction. We value initiative and ownership. While support is available, we expect you to operate with a high level of independence and judgment.
  • You resist change. Our firm embraces continuous improvement—of systems, processes, and ourselves. A static mindset won’t thrive here.
  • You’re not comfortable wearing multiple hats. As a growing firm, we often collaborate across roles and functions. Flexibility and willingness to contribute beyond a narrow scope are key.
