About the role
About Us
Nova Scotia is rich in natural resources – including biodiversity, forests, geological resources, provincial parks and the land we manage. The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, mineral, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province.
About Our Opportunity
As the GIS Officer 1–2, you will play a key role in supporting provincial forest modelling and landscape planning initiatives. Your primary responsibilities will include the interpretation of satellite imagery and various geospatial datasets to identify, edit, and attribute features within a Geographic Information System (GIS). A core function of this role is the development and refinement of an up-to-date forest road layer to support planning activities.
Additional duties may involve:
- Summarizing and analyzing spatial datasets
- Creating maps and other visual products to meet specific requests
- Collaborating with specialists across several domains, including growth and yield, forest modelling, tree improvement, timber management, forest inventory, and forest ecosystems.
This position occasionally requires field verification of GIS attributes through direct observation and measurement. Travel across the province by vehicle may be necessary.
This role reports to the Senior Resource Analyst.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this opportunity, you have successfully graduated from an approved technical institution with a specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and possess practical experience in GIS feature editing. You excel in performing detailed tasks within a focused and structured environment.
You demonstrate sound judgment and are capable of executing responsibilities independently, with minimal supervision. This role requires initiative, critical thinking, and the ability to make informed decisions to achieve project objectives.
Other requirements:
- Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, or equivalent platforms
- Ability to view and interpret satellite imagery accurately
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Assets:
- Experience with programming languages including Python or SQL
- Background in forestry-related work
Your qualifications and competencies may be evaluated through a combination of the following tools: written examinations, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and references.
