Starting Salary

$8,196.30 per assigned course consisting of three workload hours. The rate for any courses requiring fewer or greater hours shall be prorated based on this standard.

Additional Information

Two positions available: one in the Fall 2025 Semester, one in the Spring 2026 Semester. Appointment may end early or be extended.

Duties:

  • Assist student writers with a wide range of writing situations in a friendly and supportive environment.
  • Meet with students from all disciplines for one-on-one tutorials primarily in-person to help them develop and express their ideas effectively in their writing.
  • Give workshops on aspects of the writing process.
  • Update Writing Centre resources as required.
  • Participate in events like RockVIU and Long Night Against Procrastination to support student engagement and retention.
  • Work with librarians to determine opportunities for shared workshops.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

Hold a regular faculty appointment at VIU (BCGEU or VIUFA). Master's Degree from an appropriately accredited institution in a discipline related to Vancouver Island University's education offerings and experience teaching in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD from an appropriately accredited institution, experience tutoring student writers, and a willingness to tutor students from across the disciplines.
