About the role

The Office of Indigenous Engagement under the Office of the Provost & VP Academic is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Research Assistant, Intercultural Education & Reporting.

This position reports to the Director, Indigenous Strategy, Office of Indigenous Engagement, with day-to-day operational oversight and supervision provided by the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives in the Office of Indigenous Engagement.

Working collaboratively and independently, the incumbent will work closely with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives on special intercultural education projects for non-credit professional development and support the data collection process for the Annual Journey Update report. For projects underway, the incumbent will support the gathering of information/narrative data, data analysis, and the compilation and writing of final reports. Additionally, the incumbent may be requested to assist with the coordination and facilitation of anti-Indigenous Racism sessions and other related intercultural workshops as well as support the team with the planning of special events, webinars, and programs hosted by the Office of Indigenous Engagement.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Development and facilitation of intercultural capacity programing.
  • Research, development, and launch of the Two Spirit Indigiqueer intercultural education program.
  • Make revisions and updates to current intercultural education courses.
  • Creation of a visual graphic for intercultural learning pathways for UCalgary learners and non-UCalgary learners.
  • Research processes like the coordination of interviews and dialogues (when required), including the booking of rooms, recruitment of participants.
  • Note taking/recordings during interviews and circle dialogues.
  • Assist with data collection, data analysis, and coding of narrative data for the purpose of program planning.
  • Ensure data is securely stored, and that it can be retrieved for analysis in a consistent and organized fashion.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, business units and faculties to gather data for the Annual Journey Update report.
  • Conduct an institutional scan to support new intercultural program initiatives in consultation with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives.
  • Support all major events hosted by the Office of Indigenous Engagement.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completed a post-secondary program in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.
  • Experience with Indigenous research methodologies for community-based research projects.
  • Research skills and experiences related to data collection, data analysis, transcribing, coding, and report writing.
  • Familiarity with the principles of anti-racism education in the context of reconciliation.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Elders and/or Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
  • Familiarity and/or work experience with the Indigenous organizations.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, focus groups, and dialogues/circles.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen effectively and take sufficient notes.
  • Working understanding of ii' taa'poh'to'p, UCalgary's Indigenous Strategy content, visionary circles, and recommendations.
  • Basic knowledge of organizational structure of the University of Calgary.
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Teams, Zoom, Internet Skills, and programs for organizing information.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team, and collaboration skills, ability to exercise judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge about Indigenous peoples, cultures, and history.
  • Knowledge about regional Indigenous cultural protocols.
  • Experience within Indigenous programs, communities, or organizations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and accurately perform work.
