BASIC FUNCTION:
The Senior Accountant will inherit certain duties being performed by the Controller, Grants Accountant, and Accounting Specialist. This role is responsible for accounting, financial planning, management and reporting on TRIUMF operating and grant funds. This role will also perform complex financial analysis, manage internal controls, conduct training sessions with finance and non-finance staff, and assist in drafting process documentation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides a full range of accounting services, including
- Manages general accounting process. Ensures accounting transactions are processed accurately and timely
- Ensures timely reconciliation of financial accounts and works with various stakeholders to resolve outstanding issues
- Prepares financial statements and forecasts to support business decisions
- Plans, implements and oversees cash and credit card management activities
- Develop, analyze and maintain costings of TRIUMF resources, production processes and key cost drivers
- Meets with departments across TRIUMF, reviewing actual performance with projected results; assesses impact of surpluses/variances
- Prepares audit working papers and compliance statements. Liaises with internal and external audit groups, including providing information and explanatory discussions with auditors
- Provides financial advice, training, and support to TRIUMF users in the areas of accounting, budgeting, financial matters, forecasting and implications of various accounting policies and sound business practices
- Identifies and follows through on opportunities of new revenue and funding to TRIUMF and TRIUMF’s research. Develops complex financial models for a broad range of strategic and operational initiatives
- Understands and promotes consistent application of TRIUMF’s finance policies and procedures. Drafts policy and makes recommendations to continuously improve business processes and procedures. Ensures adequate controls are in place to safeguard the TRIUMF’s assets
- Leads and provides financial information to collaborative grant and project meetings
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
There are no direct subordinates, however some supervisory responsibilities are associated with this position. This position is often required to evaluate the quality of work prepared by others and take appropriate corrective actions.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Expert knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and good knowledge of commodity taxation rules (GST/PST applications), public expenditure policies and general administrative processes.
- Knowledge of Canadian charity law and research grant administration would be an asset.
- Excellent computer skills and intermediate knowledge of Excel are required.
- Experience with Workday would be an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to a high-performing team environment.
- Exceptional ability to build relationships and partnerships is a requirement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
- Certified Public Accountant designation (CPA, CGA, CMA, or CA)
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience with and ability to consolidate and interpret financial data and present findings
- Experience in the not-for-profit or public sector
- Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources
- Ability to simultaneously manage a diverse range of complex projects and activities
