The Preparator supports the success of exhibitions and events by assisting with the preparation, installation, and de-installation of exhibitions within concentrated schedules. The role involves regular physical activity, and work with a range of materials, lighting, equipment, and tools.

Working primarily in the Libby Leshgold Gallery, and other ECU exhibition spaces, the Preparator constructs and assembles simple exhibition props and displays such as plinths and space dividers and completes minor maintenance to physical spaces related to installations and de-installation of artworks and exhibitions.

Some Typical Duties:

  • Receives, and safely unpacks, and manages a wide range of types of artworks.

  • Prepares exhibition spaces, and constructs or assembles exhibition furniture and props.

  • Installs, maintains, and takes-down exhibitions.

  • Appropriately packages artworks for storage or shipping.

  • Participates in meetings with artists to better understand their vision for display and exhibition of their work. Troubleshoots and researches options in support of the vision.

  • Assists ECU students with the installation of their artwork in ECU exhibition spaces.

  • Completes minor maintenance such as patching and painting walls to remediate spaces after deinstallation of an exhibition.

  • Other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum, Grade 12 plus additional education or training of over 1 year.

  • Minimum 1 year experience as a Preparator or similar role in an art gallery or exhibition space.

  • Or equivalent education and experience.

  • Knowledge of OH+S and WHMIS codes and regulations.

  • knowledge of gallery and museum best practices in art handling and installation techniques.

  • Experience assisting artists with the public presentation of their work.

  • Experience working with tools, including small power tools such as saws, and drills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Time management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely work with tools, including small power tools.

  • Ability to assemble and construct simple exhibition structures such as dividers and plinths.

  • Ability to operate audio-visual equipment such as projectors, sound equipment, media players and microphones.

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment for extended periods of time.

  • Computer proficiency with both Mac and PC programs for media-based art works.

  • Comfortable with heights.

  • Driver’s license an asset.
