We are accepting applications for a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator (operator) to join our Engineering Services team starting in August 2025 for a period of up to 12 months. The Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment and related systems at both the biosolids compost facility and the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre (CVWMC). This position supports a wide range of tasks including compost processing, landfill construction, waste transport and compaction, equipment troubleshooting, and compliance monitoring. The role requires flexibility, mechanical aptitude, and a strong commitment to safe work practices in support of operations running seven days a week.

Reporting to the Managers of Wastewater Services and CVWMC Operations the primary responsibilities of this role include:

Compost Facility Operations:
Installing, operating, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing compost equipment (e.g. conveyors, mixers, loaders, pumps, blowers, screening plants).

Conducting testing and monitoring of composting processes and making adjustments within defined parameters to ensure compliance with regulations.

Analyzing and troubleshooting operational issues; implementing corrective actions.

Assisting trades personnel with repair work as required.

Performing lab tests and entering data into computerized systems for process control, inventory, and maintenance tracking.

Loading compost into customer/commercial vehicles and preparing load slips for billing.

Maintaining inventory of parts and supplies; ordering items as needed.

Performing general housekeeping duties including cleaning, painting, and landscaping.

Landfill Operations:
Transporting, placing, compacting, and covering waste using heavy mobile equipment (e.g. landfill compactors, bulldozers, loaders).

Maintaining stockpiles such as yard waste using equipment like excavators and tandem gravel trucks.

Operating tandem cable roll-off truck to move bins from drop-off to landfill face.

Monitoring incoming refuse for restricted/prohibited materials and managing controlled waste per procedures.

Maintaining roads and working areas for safety and usability.

Directing site users and screen waste for compliance.

Cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining all equipment following pre-start checklists.

Explaining and enforcing CVRD bylaws; responding to public inquiries.

Our ideal candidate is:
Experienced in the practices and procedures related to landfill/waste management operations with over two up to and including three years of directly related experience.

Certified as a BC Qualified Landfill Operator, along with high school graduation, a valid BC Driver’s License (class 3 with air brake endorsement) and Occupational First Aid (Level 1).

Trades certification as a Heavy Equipment Operator, WHMIS, confined space entry, Compost Facility Operator Certification (Compost Council of Canada), certification in road building or earthmoving techniques. (preferred).

Mechanically inclined and skilled in equipment repair and calculations.

Knowledge of biosolids composting processes and landfill operations.

Able to work independently and as part of a team.

Effective communicator with strong public and team interaction skills.

Safety-conscious and committed to hazard awareness and safe practices

Flexible to work weekends and varying shifts in all weather conditions.

This is a CUPE Local 556 with a current wage rate of $35.17 per hour.
