About the role
The Opportunity:
Our client, an international mining company is looking for a Underground Operations Manager to join their team in Northern Ontario. The Underground Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of all underground mining operations. This includes directing both internal teams and external contractors across development, production, backfilling, and support functions. The position requires strong leadership, operational planning, and contractor management to ensure all activities align with safety protocols, production targets, and company goals. The successful candidate will be a key driver in promoting a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement across the operation.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Provide decisive leadership to underground crews and contractors, promoting a strong culture of safety, high performance, and collaboration across all facets of operations.
- Champion a proactive approach to health and safety by leading inspections, conducting risk assessments, overseeing incident investigations, and holding teams accountable to site safety standards.
- Direct the safe and efficient execution of all underground mining activities—including development, production, backfilling, and support—ensuring adherence to mine plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Work closely with Mine Engineering, Geology, and Maintenance teams to coordinate and optimize the execution of operational plans.
- Oversee contractor performance, ensuring work is completed to required standards, regulatory compliance is maintained, and any issues related to scope, schedule, or quality are promptly addressed.
- Contribute to mine planning, budgeting, and performance reporting; monitor key performance indicators and lead initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and boost productivity.
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation, adopting emerging technologies, and implementing enhanced mining methods based on operational feedback.
- Develop and manage the underground operations budget, including areas such as fixed plant, electrical systems, shaft operations, and support services.
- Lead routine operational meetings—including daily lineups, weekly KPI reviews, and monthly operations scrums—to ensure alignment with the 7/21 plan, quarterly planning goals, and annual budget objectives.
What You’ll Need To Be Successful:
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or a degree/diploma in related field.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in an underground mining environment post-graduation.
- Experience in a mechanized underground mine is essential.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and mining software such as Deswik.
- Strong understanding of underground mining practices, especially longhole stoping with paste backfill.
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in various stages of underground operations, including ventilation, development, backfill, production, scheduling, and drill & blast.
