POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Information Technology Manager, the Senior Network Administrator is an effective communicator focused on building and maintaining strong relationships with peers, users, vendors, and other parties. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, monitoring, and support of a hybrid, Active Directory (AD)/Entra, multi-site environment including Local Area network (LAN)/Wide Area Network (WAN), Virtual Private Network (VPN), firewalls, switches, routers, server virtualization environment, wireless and voice technologies, Storage Area Networks (SANs) and Network-Attached Storage (NAS) devices. This position centers on optimizing network performance and reliability with a focus on business continuity, security and disaster recovery while contributing to the organization’s goal of enhancing its processes and systems. Acting as a subject matter expert and a point of contact for external vendors, this role will respond to infrastructure and server related escalations, requests, and projects.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science or related discipline from a recognized institution
  • Successful completion of recognized industry certifications: Microsoft Server, Microsoft Azure, VMware, HPE Nimble/Alletra, Cisco, Fortinet, or CompTIA+
  • A minimum of 7 years of recent computer and network infrastructure design and administration experience in a hybrid Microsoft environment
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience designing, configuring, monitoring, and optimizing wired/wireless LAN/WAN, SAN, NAS, VPN, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), virtual server environments, cabling infrastructure, backup strategies, firewalls, Wireless Access Points (WAPs), routing and switching.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience designing, configuring, monitoring, and optimizing cloud services like Microsoft Entra/Azure, Exchange Online, Teams, and SharePoint
  • Experience working in a local government or First Nation setting is considered an asset
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

REQUIREMENTS

  • Criminal Record Check with results acceptable to Westbank First Nation (WFN)
  • Valid Driver’s license with acceptable driver’s abstract and personal vehicle
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs
  • Must be able to work during non-office hours
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of Westbank First Nation

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Advises the Information Technology Manager on all situations affecting departmental performance and resources
  • Designs, implements, maintains, optimizes, and supports data, voice, and wireless communications systems; sets and enforces security in accordance with accepted IT standards & practices
  • Designs, implements, maintains, optimizes, and supports a virtualized VMware server environment with attention to security, high availability, and scalability
  • Implements, maintains, optimizes, and supports SAN devices; monitors and forecasts storage needs to ensure adequate capacity and performance
  • Implements, maintains, optimizes, and supports firewalls, switches, routers, WAPs, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and NAS devices
  • Establishes and maintains robust local and offsite backup and recovery procedures to safeguard data integrity including backup of infrastructure configurations
  • Establishes and enforces infrastructure device configuration and change control processes
  • Acts as third-tier support for complex network issues to WFN and its entities potentially during non-office hours; provides second-tier or other hands-on computer, server and communications support as required
  • Utilizes project management skills to plan, execute, and complete network infrastructure projects
  • Identifies gaps and recommends technology enhancements based on analysis of business processes, workflow requirements, data, and security requirements
  • Assists in designing, planning, and executing network upgrades, migrations, and expansions; possesses exceptional strategic planning skills to ensure that network changes align with organizational growth and future technological needs
  • Performs or arranges for hardware repairs and maintenance for infrastructure, server, and other peripheral equipment
  • Provides mentorship to colleagues to learn essential skills and information to effectively support the infrastructure facilitating knowledge transfer and business continuity
  • Maintains and updates hardware and software inventory, including network infrastructure devices as part of a comprehensive asset management strategy
  • Communicates respectfully and maintains a positive working relationship with IT team members, WFN employees, management, vendors, and other parties; works collaboratively to plan, deploy and support the network infrastructure
  • Stays current with emerging technologies and best practices to recommend strategic upgrades and optimizations that enhance network performance, security, and efficiency
  • Responsible for the maintenance of effective network cabling and wireless communications infrastructure at various WFN locations
  • Creates and maintains documentation while performing all duties including standard operating procedures, maintenance records, network diagrams and IP schemas
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures, and as assigned by the Information Technology Manager

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Advanced knowledge of network protocols and network monitoring tools
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 and its associated services including Multifactor Authentication (MFA), conditional access policies, Intune for device management, Defender, and OneDrive
  • Advanced knowledge of a Microsoft on-premises environment including Active Directory, group policy, Exchange email and SQL database servers.
  • Skilled in implementing security controls in both cloud and on-premises settings
  • Expertise in a variety of wired & wireless communications infrastructure in a corporate environment
  • Skilled in designing scalable and robust networks
  • Proficient in the creation and management of firewall rules and VPN, VLAN, and VOIP configuration and access management
  • Proficient with Aruba (HP)/Cisco enterprise switches, Fortinet firewalls, HPE Nimble or Alletra SANs, Meraki/Fortinet WAPs, APC/Liebert UPS, and Synology NAS devices
  • Knowledge of Veeam backup and replication software or Afi.ai is an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of project management; ability to lead network infrastructure related projects from inception to completion
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and perform effectively in stressful situations
  • Ability to effectively work independently or collaborate as part of a team
  • Ability to express complex ideas clearly in both written and verbal communication
  • Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and shifting operational landscapes
