The opportunity:
The Career Advisor plays a vital role in supporting undergraduate students and alumni through the Career Development Centre by providing front-line career guidance. Reporting to the Lead, Student Success and Strategic Initiatives, the advisor assists individuals in developing career readiness skills, preparing for employment, and navigating professional opportunities. This includes one-on-one support for career exploration, résumé and cover letter writing, interview preparation, job search strategies, and the use of online tools. Additionally, the Career Advisor delivers workshops on topics such as networking, job searching, and professional communication.
Beyond student support, the Career Advisor actively engages with employers by coordinating recruitment activities, including job postings, on-campus interviews, and information sessions. The advisor promotes best practices for employer engagement and helps ensure students connect with meaningful opportunities. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, promoting events, and organizing career-related programming. By fostering strong networks with employers across sectors and representing the Career Development Centre professionally, the Career Advisor helps create an accessible, inclusive, and impactful career development experience for all students and alumni.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- Completion of a formal administrative and marketing program from a recognized institution required.
- Three years' of directly related experience in an office setting required, preferably working in an administrative role working directly with students and the business community.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in communications and marketing.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting career development practices.
- Must have a strong understanding of various marketing platforms, channels, and best practices, including social media (Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn), email marketing and digital design applications (Canva, Adobe).
- Experience assisting with event planning and execution is an asset.
- Experience in accounting basics and preparing reports is an asset.
- An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Marketing and communications experience is essential.
- Must be proficient in the use of MS Office, including Access and Excel.
- Proficiency using digital design applications such as Canva, and Adobe Photoshop and proficiency maintaining a web page using Drupal would be an asset.
- Proficiency with Aurora Finance and Banner would be assets. Basic accounting knowledge an asset.
- Strong customer service orientation and teamwork skills are essential.
- Demonstrated ability to use social media channels to communicate information and market services and events required.
- Experience assisting with event planning and execution is an asset.
- Must demonstrate initiative and work well both independently and in a team environment.
- Must be able to manage and prioritize work delegated from different team members.
- Must be able to take ownership of areas of responsibility and be committed to continuous improvement.
- Must have excellent organization and time management skills and show flexibility and adaptability in coping with changing priorities.
- Must have a positive attitude, helpful demeanour and be able to effectively and efficiently work with large numbers of stakeholders at one time.
- Excellent problem-solving skills using sound judgment are required.
- Accuracy and attention to detail in work is essential. The ability to produce error-free documentation is an asset.
- Strong written skills are required.
- Professional appearance and conduct are required.
- *Overtime and flexibility for lunch breaks may be required during peak periods.*
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
