ABOUT THE BC OFFSHORE SCHOOL: CIS – Astana is BC’s first not- for-profit Offshore School. CIS – Astana is an innovative, co-educational secondary day school.
CIS – Astana is a preparatory school, initially offering grades 10 to 12. For the 2025-26 , we anticipate increased enrolment at the school. It will be our fourth academic year of operation. The mission of the school is to provide students, from Kazakhstan and throughout the region, an opportunity to earn a Dogwood Diploma and continue their studies at a Canadian university, or universities throughout the English speaking world.
CIS – Astana has growth plan of reaching nine hundred students (pre-K to 12) in the coming years. All of the students accepted for the 2025-2026 academic year will be eligible for partial and full-ride scholarships. CIS – Astana is developing a brand-new, purpose-built campus to welcome students for September 2028.
ABOUT THE NON-PROFIT FOUNDATION: The Ulytau Charitable Foundation was established in 2021. “Ulytau” in Kazakh means great mountain and is a region of historical significance in Kazakhstan. The foundation was established with broad goals to contribute to benefit education in Kazakhstan. The Ulytau Foundation established CIS-A, the first British Columbia Offshore School in Central Asia. The school is in the capital city, Astana. The school opened its doors in September of 2022.
OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION: CIS – Astana is seeking a full-time enthusiastic and energetic teacher to join our expanding team.
We're seeking a teacher who will collaborate closely with our experienced team of BC Certified educators to deliver BC curriculum in grades 10 to 12 in the following curricular areas: Science 10, Life Science 11, Electronics and Robotics 10, Computer Studies 10, and Computer Programming 11. Experience with Physical and Health Education is an asset.
Successful candidates’ assignments will be developed from their experience and academic preparation, as required by the principal in mutual agreement with the successful candidates, and as is required by the BC Ministry of Education.
She/he will be expected to manage their classrooms effectively, maintain good student discipline, support the standards and policies of the school and assist with the supervision of students as required or as additionally requested by the Principal. With the Principal and other teachers, he/she will be expected to organize events, clubs and other activities for the students.
The successful candidate will be a positive role model and always demonstrate high moral standards for students, conduct himself/herself appropriately both professionally and personally at the school and within the community, as fitting for a teacher at an academic-oriented, BC Offshore School. Finally, the position may include physical duties and responsibilities and so the successful candidate must be able to perform these tasks - more details can be provided during the interview process.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- BC teaching certification, or eligibility for BC teaching certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Education from a recognized university - Canadian or international
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Understanding of other cultures and the ability to communicate in a cross-cultural working environment. This includes communications with students, parents, teachers and the public.
- Holds a considerable level of computer skills including the use of the Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint), communications programs such as Zoom and Teams and social media tools such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. As well as the ability to learn software programs that may be used at the school.
- Proficiency with PowerSchool or a similar integrated student information system/database preferred.
- Ability to build and maintain positive, cooperative, and service-oriented relationships within the school community and broader community.
- Canadian Permanent Residence or Citizenship
Compensation commensurate with experience. Salary scale competitive with BC public school districts in the Lower Mainland. Benefits include health care, annual return flights from/to the point-of-hire, accommodation stipend, dependent tuition discount, visa acquisition support and generous vacation entitlement.
