We are currently recruiting a Budget Officer to join our Financial Services group for a 14 month term . In this role you will report to the assistant director, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), and be responsible for conducting processes related to the budgeting and forecasting for all entities within Universities Canada. In addition, you will serve as the primary contact for managers across the organization, supplying up-to-date financial information to support effective decision-making and planning purposes.

Your responsibilities:

  • Participate in the budget and projection processes, including establishing a timeline at the beginning of each financial planning cycle, preparing comprehensive budget spreadsheets, creating training documents, and providing guidance to staff on budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis best practices;
  • Conduct month end analysis, present key findings to staff, and provide recommendations;
  • Participate in financial year-end audit through journal entries, updating notes to financial statements, assisting in account reconciliation and collecting samples for external audit;
  • Assist in the financial management of grants and funding sources;
  • Participate in cost-benefit analysis, financial modeling and scenario analysis for strategic decision-making;
  • Develop reporting tools such as dashboards and month-end statements for presentation purposes.

Education, experience and abilities:

Education and experience:

  • University degree in accounting or finance;
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in a related role;
  • Experience working in Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains or other financial systems an asset.

Abilities:

  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines and demands;
  • Proficiency with use of MS suite including Excel and Word;
  • Ability to learn and use various financial databases effectively;
  • High degree of organization and professionalism;
  • Attention to detail, accuracy and completeness;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, both in French and English is a strong asset;
  • Strong sense of initiative and judgment.

The position is based in Ottawa. Universities Canada has adopted a hybrid work model where employees are expected to work in the office a minimum of two days per week.

The hiring salary range for this position starts at $58,452 depending on experience. Candidates who do not meet all position requirements may be considered in an underfill capacity, in which case the candidate would be hired at a lower level than the position level.
