Your Opportunity

As a key member of the Culinary and Pastry Arts team, reporting to the Operations Specialist, Culinary and Pastry Arts, and with general direction from the Department Chair(s) and Executive Chef, the Dishwasher is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitization standards for glassware, tableware and cooking utensils using machine and manual cleaning methods. This includes ensuring classrooms are fully equipped with clean utensils and equipment before the start of class. The Dishwasher also ensures the dishwashing area itself is maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner, and carries out kitchen cleanup duties. May also assist other Dishwasher employees with training.

Functions and Duties

  1. Ensures all dishes and kitchen supplies are cleaned to food safety standards.

  2. Sorts, rinses, and washes dirty dishes, glassware, tableware, pots, pans, trays, and other cooking utensils using machine and manual cleaning methods as required.

  3. Performs general dish room duties such as:

  • Restocking clean utensils and tableware in appropriate storage shelves and classrooms
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the dishwashing area, ensuring proper daily maintenance of the dish machine
  • Washing and folding kitchen laundry
  • Regular garbage disposal
  • Washing walls and other kitchen equipment and furnishings as required
  1. Busses dishes from program kitchens; ensures classrooms are set with clean cooking utensils and other supplies as required.

  2. Ensures compliance with all provincial workplace safety standards.

  3. As needed, assists other Dishwasher employees with training. May provide feedback on standard operating procedures.

  4. Performs other related duties as required.

Education and Experience

Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent is required. Up to and including 6 months related experience would be considered an asset. Experience working in a commercial kitchen would be considered an asset.

Must possess a valid Food Safe Certificate and WHIMIS Certificate or be willing to undergo training and certification.

May be required to work days, evenings, and weekends based on operational needs and events.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to prioritize, be flexible, and manage a high work volume and competing priorities to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with staff, students and public

  • Able to work effectively and cooperatively with minimal to no supervision

  • Able to lift/move objects up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift/move objects up to 25 and including 50 pounds

  • Able to adhere to food, health, and safety regulations while carrying out dishwasher duties

  • Demonstrates excellent verbal communication skills and ability to follow instructions

  • Able to perform work of a routine nature.

  • Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
