Job Description:

** We have three (3) Casual positions available.

This position provides excellent customer service support in the sale of retail course materials (texts, printed modules, software, etc.) and general merchandise for all Bookstore Services customers including on-line via continuing education. The focus of this position is to be a team player on the sales floor, while interacting with customers in person, by phone, mail, e-mail and web-commerce.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provides customer service activities in a busy retail environment:
  • Provides customer service on the retail floor and cash desk. Includes but not limited to: greeting customers, assisting customers to discern needs, providing product information, and following up on requests.
  • Cashiers on a point-of-service scanning system according to established policies and procedures. Includes but not limited to: processing payment, issuing refunds, balancing daily cash receipts, balancing cash journals, wrapping and bagging purchases, etc.
  • Processes phone orders by answering questions and inputting customer book orders into the POS mail/courier module.
  • Assists out-of-town customers on the phone.
  • Responds to customer requests and queries left on voicemail. Inputs voice-mail orders into inventory management system accordingly.
  1. Processes orders received electronically through email, WinPRISM, and other e-business processes:
  • Receives customer queries and text orders via email and requires rigorous follow-up to ascertain pertinent order information.
  • Processes orders received via the WinPRISM mail-order module and data enters order information accordingly.Sets up agency-sponsored students' and departmental accounts in WinPRISM and performs basic account maintenance.
  • Follows up on orders, including but not limited to: verifying registration, picking, packing, running purchases through the POS and credit card machines.
  • Prepares way-bills for courier delivery through web-client software.
  1. Assists in merchandising, store displays, and general maintenance of the retail floor:
  • Performs general maintenance of the retail floor and stock room: dusts fixtures, straightens stock on shelves, and maintains stationary and clothing supplies.
  • Continuously replenishes stock on the floor, especially during rush periods.
  • Maintains special order/reserves shelf: customer follow-up, stock replenishment, return items to retail floor.
  • Replenishes consumables (e.g., bags, stamps, tape, etc) used in customer service activities.
  • Actively observes retail floor activities to ensure that customers' needs are met, as well as ensuring the security and safeguarding of merchandise.
  • Prepares shelf tags and creates basic signs for displays, using standard word processing applications.
  • Assists with year-end inventory stock-count.
  • Receives bookstore merchandise such as newspapers, magazines, etc.
  1. Performs related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.

Qualifications Required:

Education

  • High school completion including courses in computer applications, e-commerce, or related training related to the provision of customer service.
  • One year general retail experience using an integrated POS and integrated inventory system (e.g., WinPRISM). Preference given to candidates with practical experience in a college store, bookstore, or high-volume retail environment.
  • An equivalence combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency with point-of-sale system (POS), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); familiarity with e-mail and the Internet; Banner and database experience preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills (including tact and courtesy) are required to excel in a busy team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Attention to detail and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks and multi-task among multiple customer demands.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Sound keyboarding skills for database entries, email correspondence and spreadsheets.
  • Keyboarding skills of 40 wpm.
  • Ability to learn new programs such as sophisticated inventory systems.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain records and confidentiality in accordance to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties such as standing, lifting >10kg weights, and providing public counter service duties.

Working Conditions

  • Extremely busy environment can lead to extended periods of standing at the register and dealing with multiple customers.
  • Position is required to work flexible work schedules. Shifts may occur Monday to Saturday, but not on Sundays.
