Job Summary
We are seeking a proactive detail-oriented Legal Assistant to join our legal team. Candidates must have an Alberta Legal Assistant Diploma plus 3 years’ work experience with at least 1 year of work experience in family law with litigation experience.
Your work will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of 1 lawyer’s legal practice at a friendly collegial firm of 7 lawyers. You must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with clients and other stakeholders on the telephone, in person, and over email. You must have strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. You should be collaborative, professional, adaptable, positive, have a strong work ethic, and be interested in your work. We are looking for a candidate who can take initiative and anticipate the next steps.
Tasks include scheduling appointments, maintaining calendars, monitoring email, coordinating meetings, tracking deadlines, ensuring timely completion of tasks, transcribing dictation, drafting correspondence, drafting court documents, drafting agreements, and other tasks.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and administrative skills and be able to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Knowledge of court processes and rules for family law is required. Fast accurate typing and a strong understanding of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook are essential. Experience with Adobe Acrobat and Cosmolex is an asset. Experience with legal research is an asset. Some experience with civil litigation is asset.

Duties
- Assist attorneys in preparing legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and contracts.
- Conduct thorough research on various legal issues and case law to support ongoing cases.
- Manage project timelines and ensure all deadlines are met efficiently.
- Organize and maintain case files, ensuring all documents are accurate and up-to-date.
- Perform clerical duties such as filing, data entry, and maintaining office supplies.
- Conduct interviews with clients and witnesses to gather pertinent information for cases.
- Exhibit excellent phone etiquette when communicating with clients, courts, and other parties.
- Proofread legal documents for accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
- Provide administrative support as needed, including scheduling appointments and managing calendars.
Experience
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
- Proven experience in project management within a legal or administrative setting.
- Strong interviewing skills to effectively gather information from clients.
- Proficiency in research techniques relevant to the legal field.
- Exceptional organizational abilities to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Experience with clerical tasks such as filing, data entry, and document management.
