Position Summary

The Development Services Department, Building Division, is accepting applications to fill one (2) regular full-time Building Inspector III (Large/Complex Buildings) position. Reporting to the Manager, Inspections and Deputy Chief Building Official, this position is responsible for compliance inspections of various stages of construction of all residential, commercial, industrial and institutional building systems, works, fire safety systems, fixtures and service systems appurtenant to buildings regulated by Part 3 and Part 9, Division B of the Ontario Building Code (OBC). This position is also responsible for area surveillance.

  • Ensure inspections are completed within the time frames mandated by the Ontario Building Code
  • Review and inspect the structural, architectural and life safety components of all Part 3 and 9 buildings to ensure conformance with the OBC and related standards
  • The construction, extension, material alteration, repair, demolition or the change of use of all heating, cooling, ventilation, air-conditioning, on-site septic, site servicing and plumbing building systems, works, fixtures and service systems appurtenant to buildings regulated by Part 3, and Part 9 Division B of the OBC and any accessory buildings, as an appointed inspector under the Building Code Act
  • Organize and prioritize inspection requests, provide deficiency list to builder/contractor and enter inspection results into the database system for the purpose of maintaining accurate and current inspection records
  • Provide interpretation and guidance with code-related issues for both internal and external clients as it relates to the structural, architectural and life safety components of Part 3 and 9 buildings to ensure conformance with the OBC and related standards
  • Liaise with property owners, contractors, engineers, architects and other departments on matters related to construction activity
  • Monitor an assigned area for building construction and/or alterations without a permit
  • Investigate and respond to complaints from the public relating to the Ontario Building Code
  • Prepare, issue and post orders pursuant to the Act; prepare prosecution fact sheets and attend Court in legal proceedings as a witness for the Town
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives

Education & Experience

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary advanced Diploma in Architectural Engineering Technology or equivalent education and knowledge in the construction industry
  • Registered Architect or Professional Engineer and in good standing within the Ontario Association of Architects or the Professional Engineers of Ontario is considered an asset
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Municipal Inspector with a broad comprehension of all building systems; seven (7) years of relevant experience in architectural design and construction preferred
  • Required Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing qualifications in the following categories (BCIN required):
  • General Legal/Process
  • Complex Buildings
  • Large Buildings

  • House
  • HVAC House
  • Plumbing House
  • Plumbing All Buildings
  • Building Services
  • Detection, Lighting & Power
  • Detailed working knowledge of the Building Code Act, and all sections of the Ontario Building Code and other building-related legislation/regulations/by-laws and related inspection processes; traditional and contemporary issues in the building industry; building design and construction principles; municipal government; the Occupational Health and Safety Act; and related construction regulations
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings, specification and reports
  • Proficiency with AMANDA software and experience with electronic plans review system (BlueBeam) preferred
  • Ability to interpret related National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes & standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to mediate and resolve conflicts
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License with a driving record that demonstrates responsible/safe driving behavior as use of a personal vehicle is required.

Milton is a town in Southern Ontario, Canada, and part of the Halton Region in the Greater Toronto Area. Between 2001 and 2011 Milton was the fastest growing municipality in Canada, with a 71.4% increase in population from 2001 to 2006 and another 56.5% increase from 2006 to 2011.
