The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Senior Supervisor
Reports to: Assistant Manager
Employee status: Hourly, Full-time
Supervises: Supervisors, full time and part time staff
Hours per week: up to 37.5 hrs
Compensation: $22.50 per hour, plus tips
About the AMS
The Alma Mater Society (AMS), established as a formal constitution of UBC's student organization in 1915, is UBC's official student union and is the largest student union in Canada. Operating as an independent organization of UBC, the AMS advocates students' interests and provides opportunities for their growth and advancement. The AMS represents over 56,000 undergraduate and graduate students and its priorities are determined by these members. In addition to offering services to students, the AMS is an advocate of students' issues and ensures the needs of students are presented to the University administration and the provincial and federal governments. The AMS Nest is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded land of the Musqueam people.
Every student at UBC is part of the AMS and the AMS is the manifestation of a shared student experience. Position Overview
The Senior Supervisor role ensures exceptional customer service and operational excellence across all café activities while developing staff through comprehensive training programs. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, experienced operator, able to motivate their immediate team and superior customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinating with the supervisors and CSR team to serve customers based on the standards set in place.
- Provide and coordinate training and continuously assessing new staff to meet the core competencies at the back and front of the house.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the back and front of the house by wiping down, sweeping, and removing trash, as required during the day.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of shelf life by checking fridges, labels, dates and rotating product.
- Maintain a timely manner of delivery of food and drinks.
- Checking the condiment stand outside the store for customers.
- Preparation work in kitchen and/or at counter (portioning, plating, wrapping, packing, coffee making, sandwich making and so on)
- Always ensuring that all outlet menus, POS, sales material and staff knowledge are up to date.
- Prepare reports at the end of the shift/week, including staff control, food control and sales.
- Assist in planning and coordination of menu.
- Address guest query & complaints and immediately take appropriate action.
- Adhering to all AMS policies and procedures as well as other entity regulations such as Food Safe, Health and Safety etc.
- Ensure the successful and safe operation of the outlet, providing an excellent guest experience and quality management.
- Assist in HR needs within the department, including recruitment and progressive discipline
- Other duties as directed by the outlet manager or assistant manager
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous 1-2 years' experience in a café supervisory role
- Minimum Food Safe level 1 certification or higher
- Working knowledge of Point of Sale, Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook is required
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to lift up to 12 kgs (26.4lbs)
- Ability to stand throughout the entire shift.
- Ability to do shift work (evenings, weekends and holidays), on call
- Language: Required to speak, read and write English
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Natural leadership qualities that can be developed on the job
- Experience working with youth an asset
