School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic and passionate educator at Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC. Mt. Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school, with a current enrolment of 285 students.

Job Description and Requirements:

We are looking for an innovative, creative and flexible teacher who can demonstrate a proficient understanding of the renewed BC curriculum, the new K-12 reporting policy, and School District 8, Kootenay Lake’s 2024 – 2029 Strategic Plan. The awarded applicant will be experienced in teaching in a multi-aged setting, fluent in assessment strategies that support learning, universal design for learning, technology integration and will strive to create an engaging, challenging, and relationship focused learning environment. The applicant will also have recent experience teaching English and Social Studies in a middle school and secondary school setting. Position Description:

The awarded applicant will be teaching two sections of Humanities 9 (English and Social Studies). This position will also include the role of Middle Years HUB and Humanities teacher. This teacher will help support and design integrated curricular projects with the Middle Years teaching team. The teacher will work collaboratively with staff to teach in a multi-aged, dynamic school environment.

Educational Qualifications:

  • A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch.

  • Bachelor of Education (Middle or Secondary) with a major in English or Social Studies

  • Recent successful experience teaching English and Social Studies at the middle school level in the past 5 years.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and classroom management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute multi-aged, integrated learning sequences.

  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies.

  • Experience with a variety of learning management systems.

Required Competencies and Experience:

  1. Demonstrated commitment to fostering a safe, welcoming school culture that promotes belonging and connection through collaboration with students, staff, and families.

  2. Design curriculum using backward design and differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of all learners.

  3. Establish a respectful, inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and supports learning through current instructional and self-regulation strategies.

  4. Collaborate effectively with colleagues and the School-Based Team—including the Inclusion Support Teacher, Aboriginal Education Teacher, Education Assistants, and Counsellor—to support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs through appropriate adaptations, modifications, and IEP-aligned strategies.

  5. Implement proactive, research-based approaches that support social-emotional learning and mental health literacy in the classroom (e.g., Trauma-Focused Schools, Open Parachute).

  6. Clearly communicate learning goals and key questions tied to curriculum big ideas, in alignment with the K–12 Reporting Policy, to students and families.

  7. Develop assessment and evaluation practices consistent with the redesigned curriculum and updated reporting framework.

  8. Demonstrate fluency with current educational technologies and a growth mindset for learning new digital tools.

  9. Integrate Indigenous worldviews and knowledge while cultivating respectful, reciprocal relationships with students, colleagues, families, and community.

  10. Design engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that are meaningful for middle school learners.

  11. Commit to ongoing professional learning and reflective practice aligned with school goals and personal growth objectives.
