Number of positions: 3 Position Overview In partnership with The City of Kelowna we are seeking a group of enthusiastic and community-minded individuals to support local climate action and environmental resilience. As a local government, the City plays a key role in shaping how the community grows, commutes, connects, and cares for its natural environment and how all of this can be done in a low-emission, climate-resilient way.
In alignment with YCCBC values, the Community Climate Action Mobilizer will assist with a variety of community-based projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing community awareness, preparedness, and resilience. Working closely with the Program Coordinator and Lead, this includes supporting outreach for programs and initiatives that the City has to offer in relation to energy efficiency, fire mitigation, water conservation, nature-based solutions and reducing community greenhouse gas emissions. This will involve assisting in creating an in-person and digital communications plan as well as attending community events to educate the public about climate action.

About Youth Climate Corps BC: Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) empowers young people to take meaningful action against the climate crisis. Through paid work and hands-on training, YCCBC equips youth with the skills to implement climate action projects that directly benefit their communities. By reducing emissions, building resilience, and fostering adaptation, YCCBC ensures real impact at the local level.
YCCBC strengthens community capacity by developing a motivated, organized, and adaptable youth workforce to bring climate plans to life. Participants aged 17-30 collaborate for four to six months, gaining essential skills, scaling up climate initiatives, and growing their leadership and community networks.
Responsibilities And Duties
- Participate in and actively engage with initial and ongoing training sessions led by YCCBC Program Coordinators, Leads, and project partners.
- Work alongside team members and community partners to advance local climate initiatives and community priorities through diverse tasks and responsibilities.
- Be open to learning new things, trying new things, and challenging yourself to grow.
- Assist with coordinating and preparing worksite logistics.
- Complete assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and with a focus on meeting project goals.
- Support the Program Coordinator and Program Lead in collecting data and compiling information for project reports.
- Contribute to building a team culture of safety, inclusion, and belonging.
- Contribute to social media promotional events and activities.
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to identify and address challenges, working toward effective solutions.
- Positively represent YCCBC and its partner organizations when engaging with the community.
- Attend community outreach events outside of traditional work hours (evenings, weekends)
- Partake in on-site outreach (face-to-face engagement in various Kelowna neighbourhoods)
Qualifications No ‘formal’ post-secondary education is required, as we recognize that ‘formal’ education at colleges and universities is just one version of many types of meaningful education.
- Must be between 17 and 30 years old and reside in the Kelowna area.
- Strong personal commitment to climate action, social justice, anti-racism/anti-oppression, diversity and inclusion, reconciliation, and decolonization.
- Awareness of how personal lived experiences with systemic barriers or privileges shape unique contributions to social change.
- Flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate project schedules.
- Legal authorization to work in Canada.
- A criminal record check may be required.
- Physical ability to perform tasks involving extended periods of standing, walking, moving supplies or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, and activities requiring bending or stooping.
Experience, Skills, And Attributes
- Curiosity to explore many kinds of work that support community climate action.
- Experience engaging with diverse community members in diverse settings.
- Adaptable and adventurous mindset, comfortable navigating ambiguity and change.
- Proficiency in using G-Suite (Google Apps), Microsoft Office, basic databases, video conferencing tools, social media platforms, and other relevant applications.
- Knowledge of and/or work experience in areas such as climate change, anti-oppression work, food security, energy, forestry, and climate justice is an asset.
- Standard First Aid certification or higher is an asset, training may be provided.
- A driver’s license is an asset.
Working Conditions
- Various job sites that will include working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and physical labour.
