About the role
The Engineering Quality Manager will lead a multi-disciplinary team responsible for engineering quality assurance across Vancouver Shipyards Engineering Department. This role is accountable for the development and execution of engineering quality strategies, managing cross-functional quality activities, and ensuring consistent application of standards and processes across projects. The role requires a strategic leader with strong technical, communication, and people management skills, capable of driving a preventive quality culture and delivering continuous improvement across engineering functions.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you'll do

Define and execute the overall Engineering Quality strategy in alignment with business objectives, shipyard standards, and regulatory requirements.

Lead and manage a multidisciplinary quality team, including QA Engineers, Data Analysts, Project Quality Engineers, and EBOM specialists.

Oversee QA resource allocation across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring optimal support based on risk and schedule priorities.

Govern the implementation of engineering quality processes, standards, and audit protocols across all disciplines and subcontractors.

Monitor and report on key engineering quality KPIs, non-conformities, and project risks to senior management and the Quality Board.

Support project teams during design reviews and milestone gates, ensuring timely quality input and documentation.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including root cause analyses and corrective/preventive actions based on audit findings and lessons learned.
Ensure training programs, work instructions, and onboarding packages are developed and maintained to build engineering quality capability.
What you'll bring

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline; Master’s degree is considered an asset.

General knowledge of shipbuilding construction methods and procedures in a matrix organization.

Professional Engineer, with a recognized, accredited institution, preferred.

5+ years of design quality management and leadership experience in a shipyard or marine design firm. 10+ years desirable.

10+ years of design experience in the shipbuilding industry. 15+ years desirable.

Proven track record in managing multi-functional teams and leading quality in complex project environments.

Strong understanding of ISO 9001, quality assurance systems, and risk-based quality management practices.

Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.

Proficiency with engineering data systems, dashboards, and reporting tools.

Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to influence and drive performance across multiple functions.

Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, especially in high-pressure or deadline-driven scenarios.

Strategic thinker with a preventive mindset and ability to anticipate engineering quality risks early.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to interact effectively with engineers, project managers, executives, and external stakeholders.

Skilled in developing and delivering executive-level dashboards, quality reports, and presentations.

Proficiency in root cause analysis, quality audits, corrective action systems, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Knowledge of engineering change processes, shipbuilding design process and configuration management practices.

Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines with a strong focus on detail and accuracy.

In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience, as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
