The Position:
We are looking for a temporary, full-time Occupational Health and Safety Specialist for a 12 month contract. The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist provides support with the Agency-Wide Occupational Health and Safety Risk Management System which emphasizes workplace safety. The OHS Specialist reports to the Occupational Health and Safety Lead.
The schedule for this role is Weekdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the Risk Management System within the Agency.
- Working collaboratively with the Lead to ensure compliance with legislation and standards (such as OHS, WCB, CARF, COR and CYCAA) and to promote a safe working environment for all workers.
- Model socially acceptable values, e.g. integrity, fairness, and respect.
- Completing a combination of administrative tasks, data management, and collaboration with various programs and departments to enhance overall workplace safety.
- Provide support as required for management and other staff.
- Participation in WCB claim management.
- Conduct health and safety audits and inspections.
- Support with health and safety investigations.
- Participate in emergency response exercises.
- Assist with the preparation and facilitation of OHS and Risk Management training.
- Assisting with the preparation and implementation of Certificate of Recognition (COR).
- Involvement in the maintenance of the Employee Incident and Injury tracking system.
- Complete duties connected to Occupational Health and Safety and People and Culture.
- Responsible for protecting own and others’ health and safety at the workplace, following health and safety practices for the position, and reporting workplace injury or hazardous concerns.
- Demonstrate knowledge of agency philosophy, vision, mission, core values, and strategic priorities.
- Responsible for the adherence and implementation of Agency policies and procedures.
- Take initiative in own learning, training, and professional development.
- Work collaboratively as a member of the team.
- Preparing and providing responses to inquiries in a manner that is clear, concise, factual, and confidential.
- Other duties as required.
Skills and Qualifications:

Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Office Management, Business Administration, or related discipline.

High professional and ethical standards.

Knowledge of Alberta OHS Legislation.

Knowledge of the Certificate of Recognition process.

Knowledge of the Worker’s Compensation Board process.

Demonstrate competence in organizational and problem-solving abilities and cross-cultural competence.

Ability to maintain professional working relationships with all Agency programs and departments.

Excellent interpersonal qualities including:

Thorough working knowledge and demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

Minimum of three years’ related experience as an administrative professional.

Minimum of one year’s experience related to health and safety.

Experience with creation and implementation of health and safety presentations for agency programs and departments.

Demonstrate competency managing and adjusting to priorities, demands, and deadlines.

Ability to work independently, and within a team, and effectively manage interruptions from colleagues, supervisor, and telephone calls.

Excellent time management skills.

A Police Information Check is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment.

A Child Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
