About the role
Job Summary Reporting to the Senior Director, Real Estate, the Legal Counsel is responsible for preparing and/or reviewing offers to lease, lease agreements and other ancillary agreements, and helping manage the corporate lease portfolio for retail stores across Canada.
Key Accountabilities
- Review deal summaries prepared by real estate brokers and internal regional leasing lead.
- Drafting and negotiating of offers, leases and amending agreements for stores across Canada.
- Review and negotiate SNDAs, estoppels, and similar agreements.
- Provide legal advice with respect to occupancy issues.
- Serve as a key partner in the development and execution of corporate real estate strategy.
- Solve legal or business problems related to lease portfolio quickly and effectively while working in a demanding and fast paced environment.
- Reporting and presentations to internal stakeholders (corporate real estate and legal departments), e.g. summaries of lease agreements as part of special projects.
- Responsible for communication flow and documentation control for all relevant project materials.
Job Requirements
- Member of a Canadian Bar and/or the Chamber of Notaries and a minimum of 2 years’ experience with a specific focus on retail leasing.
- Prior relevant experience in private practice and/or legal department of a retail organization or landlord leasing department.
- Bilingualism with strong English drafting skills.
- A collaborative team player who is adaptable, agile and thrives working in a dynamic business.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to deal with multiple tasks and changing priorities.
- Ability to work autonomously; self-directed.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated skills in relationship-building.
- Confidence; commands authority through knowledge and expertise.
