Position Title: Activity Coach, Generation Health Clinic Group Program
Location: BC Children’s Hospital (948 W. 28th Ave, Vancouver) and Langara Family YMCA (282 W 49th Ave, Vancouver)
Term: Temporary, Part-Time
Hours: 7-15 hours per week and additional time for meeting, reports and coaching
Shift: Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Saturdays 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Nature & Scope
Generation Health Clinic is a family-centered healthy living program that provides comprehensive assessment and support for children and teens aged 6-17 living with overweight and specific health concerns or living with obesity. It is delivered by a team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, dietitians, and mental health professionals who work with families to create personalized care plans. The 10-week group program supports families in making positive long-term behaviour changes for healthy living. It offers a holistic approach to health, focusing on supporting families to make positive long-term healthy living changes through balanced healthy eating, fun physical activity, mental health support, effective parenting strategies, moderate screen time, and sufficient, consistent high quality sleep, rather than dieting or weight loss. The Activity Coach supports families with their physical activity goals. Generation Health Clinic is a program of the Province of BC delivered in partnership with the Provincial Health Services Authority, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Interior Health Authority, and Fraser Health Authority.
Reporting to the Manager of Family Healthy Living Programs, the Activity Coach is responsible for implementing Generation Health Clinic's group program physical activity curriculum, leading exercise sessions, and supporting the Clinic's team and participants. This includes attending necessary trainings, participating in anthropometric measurement sessions, managing room setups, and maintaining participant records as per Generation Health Clinic’s documentation policies. Additionally, the activity coach will engage with families through various activities and orientations, ensure safety and policy adherence, and foster positive relationships. Regular communication with group program coordinator and YMCA manager and the ability to substitute in other programs are also key responsibilities.
Major Responsibilities**-** in this position, you will:**
- Required to attend any Generation Health Clinic training before starting and any YMCA specific trainings as required
- Implement Generation Health Clinic- specific physical activity curriculum and provide feedback on its implementation
- Participate in pre and post anthropometric measurement (height and weight) sessions (Week 1 & week 10) as well as recording data.
- Based on Generation Health Clinic physical activity curriculum, plan and lead weekly exercise sessions
- Assist team members with room set-up and take-down at weekly group sessions
- Collaborate and work with the Generation Health Clinic delivery team to support families, including checking in with families as they arrive and before they leave
- Deliver Physical Activity lesson plan at Week 4 session
- Keep records/attendance of participants – provide to Generation Health Clinic’s Program Coordinator at completion of group
- Using Generation Health Clinic templates, contribute summaries for patient records outlining impressions on the family’s overall progress and participation in group
- Lead Family Fun Activity sessions on the weekend
- Provide Family Orientations at the membership facility and on the fitness floor (age dependent)
- Offer, schedule, and deliver individual fitness coaching sessions during the 10-week group program
- Regular communication with Manager, Family Healthy Living Programs to support positive delivery and troubleshoot issues as they arise
- Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required
- Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately dressed and well groomed
- Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff
- Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
Qualification**-you bring:**
- Holds a current BCRPA fitness certification OR has a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology or related field
- Minimum 1 year experience working with children and families in a group setting
- HIGH FIVE® and behavior change training is an asset
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C & AED certificate
- Strong communication skills and experience working with a variety of cultures and family dynamics preferably in a family place setting
- Experience leading physical activity for youth, children and teens, including individuals with neurodiversity
- Knowledge of physical activity guidelines for youth, children and teens
- Energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate about working with children and families
- Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
