The Headhunters Recruitment has partnered with CDL Group of Companies ( https://cdlelectric.com/ ) to add a full-time Lead Design & Estimating Engineer to their growing Canadian team.

Reporting to the Canadian Operations & Special Projects Lead, the Lead Design & Estimating Engineer for CDL is responsible for designing and developing innovative solutions for railroad signal systems, contributing directly to the safety and efficiency of rail operations across Canada and in accordance with Transport Canada specifications.

You will be responsible for undertaking work on Canadian heavy rail and shortline projects in accordance with relevant standards such as Transport Canada, AREMA, CN, CPKC and Metrolinx. The successful candidate will perform design, review, and checking (up to 3rd level) for new and modified vital circuitry and application logic programs for centralized traffic control, interlockings, and highway grade crossing warning systems. You will be expected to review your own work and work done by others for adherence to applicable standards, rules and regulations, as well as all applicable client standards and signal design policies and procedures and preparation of technical documents. Included in this is site surveying, estimating, pricing, design and other duties. This position is home-based, with ~25% travel to sites.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Perform design assignments, review and checking (up to 3rd level) for new and modified vital circuitry and application logic programs for centralized traffic control, interlockings and highway grade warning systems.
  • Provide detailed cost estimates and project schedules for projects to minimize costs and disruptions to railway operations and resolve queries during construction.
  • Provide engineering support to field staff during construction and/or maintenance.
  • Verify and ensure compliance of work or actions prescribed in engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Participate in construction safety audits as required.
  • Ability to travel to various site locations in Canada is required (approx 25% of time in field)
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Valid Driver’s license.

What the successful candidate will bring:

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in railway signals design
  • Professional Engineering License (PEng)
  • 5+ years’ experience in software for crossing applications, CTC signals applications, AutoCAD and MicroStation design
  • Understanding of CN (GI’s & SCP’s), CP (RP’s) and Metrolinx Signal Design manual, GI’s & SCP’s.
  • In depth knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations pertaining to railroad and transit signal systems and highway-rail grade crossing warning systems
  • Knowledge of AREMA C&S Recommended Practices, GCS, GCR, CROR, and industry standards
  • Experience with hot box detectors and AEIs
  • Experience testing/commissioning, construction, maintenance, and/or operations
  • Rail signaling design, delivering projects for freight rail and experience with AREMA-based heavy-rail signal design
