MacEwan University is seeking a Senior Database Administrator for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Information Technology Services department.
Reporting to the Team, Lead, IT Data and Analytics, the Senior Database Administrator is a technical subject matter expert responsible for leading activities related to enterprise database technologies within Information Technology Services (ITS). You will coordinate the development and design of enterprise database systems supporting key business applications including online course management (CMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise data warehouse and business intelligence (BI) technologies critical to key University services.
Key responsibilities include:
- Working with Azure Data Factory and Microsoft Fabric to ensure data flows are automated, optimized, and reliable. This includes creating, managing, and testing data pipelines, and using Microsoft Power BI for reporting and visualization of data;
- Leading the design and maintenance of cloud-based data architecture, leveraging Azure and AWS to enable scalable data storage and processing;
- Managing the transition from existing systems (including Oracle, IBM Infosphere, etc.) to updated cloud-based environments, ensuring seamless data migration and integration;
- Maintaining, optimizing, and troubleshooting the university’s database systems, including MSQL, Azure SQL databases, AWS databases, and Oracle databases/applications;
- Monitoring and ensuring efficient data storage, performance tuning, and security compliance for all data assets;
- Acting as a liaison between the Data and Analytics team and other departments (e.g., IT, Finance, HR, etc.) to identify data needs, prioritize projects, and ensure alignment with business objectives;
- Providing ongoing support and training on data tools and technologies, including Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Power BI, Oracle databases, and data management best practices; and
- Remaining current on best practices and emerging technologies and trends in database administration.
SKILLS
You will have:
- Comprehensive knowledge of database administration principles and best practices;
- Excellent SQL, relational and multidimensional database design skills;
- Excellent knowledge of data movement, data migration, and data conversion practices;
- A strong knowledge of enterprise database architectures, theories, principles, and practices;
- A strong knowledge of data warehousing concepts and methodologies;
- Knowledge of BI tool architectures, functions, and features;
- A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve data integrity and performance issues across diverse platforms;
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively;
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve complex database issues;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written);
- The ability to analyze system performance and suggest improvements;
- The ability to adapt to new technologies (e.g., Azure, AWS, Microsoft Fabric) and tools; and
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Moodle) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in Information Technology with at least 3 years of related experience in data engineering, database administration, or a similar role, including:
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, and Microsoft Fabric
- Hands-on experience in designing and implementing ETL pipelines (using Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, or similar tools)
- Experience working with Oracle databases, MSQL, and other relational databases (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS)
- Experience in data integration and migration projects, particularly migrating from legacy systems (e.g., Oracle) to cloud-based environments
- Experience and proficiency in developing and maintaining ETL Pipelines
- Experience in database performance tuning, including query optimization and indexing
- The following would be considered an asset:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect
- Oracle Database Administrator Certification
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
- Familiarity with or experience in a post-secondary or other public sector environment
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

MacEwan University is seeking a Senior Database Administrator for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Information Technology Services department.
