Family Law Lawyer for well established, mid-size, full service law firm client, Whitby.

Job Type: Full Time Permanent.
Compensation: Salary negotiable according to seniority, plus comprehensive benefits.

Work Location: Hybrid - combination of remote-based and onsite at client's Whitby office. Onsite work expectations subject always to client business requirements, and may change according to client business need.
Responsibilities Summary:
Integrate your current, portable family law practice into a collaborative, client-focused and entrepreneurial firm offering excellent remuneration, extensive practice support resources, a collegial work environment, and significant opportunities for professional growth.
- Manage caseload of complex family law matters, including separation, divorce, custody, access, support, property division, and domestic contracts, and child protection.
- Provide legal counsel to clients regarding their rights and obligations under Ontario family law. Develop case strategies aligned with client objectives.
- Manage files independently from intake through to resolution, including maintaining accurate records, deadlines, and court dates.
- Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents, including pleadings, separation agreements, parenting plans, cohabitation/prenuptial agreements, financial disclosure statements, and court materials.
- Appear before the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice to argue motions, attend conferences, and conduct trials as required.
- Work collaboratively with support staff, other lawyers, and external professionals such as mediators, parenting coordinators, accountants, and therapists. Work closely with other practice groups within the firm, including wills & estates, real estate, and corporate, on multi-disciplinary client needs.
- Stay abreast of developments in family law, and ensure legal strategies are aligned with the latest jurisprudence and legislative updates.
- Build and maintain strong, compassionate relationships with clients; explain legal processes in clear, understandable terms.
- Maintain and grow an existing book of business; build long-term client relationships with a focus on service excellence and trust.
- Act as a mentor and resource for junior associates and clerks within the family law group. Share expertise and support professional development.
- Participate in practice group planning and firm growth initiatives. Collaborate with leadership on strategic goals, client development, and firm marketing.
- Additional legal representation, advisory and related responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:
Education: LL.B. or J.D. degree from a recognized law school.
Professional Credentials: Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
Preferred Work Experience: Approximately 8+ years of experience practicing family law in Ontario.
Sector Experience: Law firm experience required.
Technical and Language Skills Requirements:
- Proficiency with legal case management, legal billings, legal research, and legal documents management applications.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications.
- Advanced English communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to speak a second language an asset.
Task -Based Qualifications and Additional Attributes:
- Strong knowledge of Ontario’s Family Law Rules, legislation, and case law.
- Strong litigation, negotiation, and dispute resolution skills.
- Proven courtroom and negotiation experience.
- Ability to manage a high volume of cases and meet deadlines.
- Proven track record of managing complex files and achieving results for clients.
- Experience with alternative dispute resolution (ADR), collaborative law, or mediation an asset.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a commitment to excellence in client service, with desire and ability to contribute to firm leadership and growth.
- An existing and portable book of business.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
- Ability to work both remotely and onsite, abiding by organization health and safety policies.
- Ability to declare personal Non-Conflict of Interest in execution of position responsibilities.
- Satisfactory Background Checks and Employment References.
