Who are we looking for?

Due to continued growth, GHD is currently seeking a Technical Director, Hydrogeology with experience developing/maintaining client relationships and managing complex interdisciplinary projects to support and grow our business in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We are open to this individual working from any of our GTA offices (i.e., Whitby, Markham, Toronto, Peterborough, or Mississauga).

This is an excellent opportunity to apply your expertise in the environmental sector and to take on an active role in the growth of our business through business/client development, technical advisory, and staff development/mentorship. As the Technical Director, you will work with a dynamic group of geoscientists and engineers supporting a diverse range of projects across a variety of market sectors.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Geoscientific Studies and Interpretations: Ensure quality assurance of geological-geophysical data analysis and interpretation. Manage planning of new wells or platforms in order to facilitate commercial development.
  • Performance Management: Develop and propose own performance objectives; take appropriate actions to ensure achievement of agreed objectives, using the organization's performance management systems to improve personal performance. Or manage and report on team performance; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project/account team members and hold people accountable for achieving them, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team/personal objectives.
  • Organizational Capability Building: Evaluate the capabilities of staff within the department to identify gaps and prioritize development activities. Implement the organization's formal development frameworks within the area of responsibility. Coach and mentor others to support the development of the organization's talent pool.
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Manage key client and customer relationships. Likely to involve using account teams to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Project Management: Manage a portfolio of major projects in line with overall project management strategy.
  • Community of Practice Management: Contribute strongly on a strategically significant area to a community of practice in a defined area of expertise or consulting, or lead on an area of expertise or consulting practice, to contribute to thought leadership and to develop innovative practice among colleagues.
  • Personal Capability Building: Act as subject matter expert in an area of technology, policy, regulation, or operational management for the team and beyond in the function. Maintain external accreditations and in-depth understanding of current and emerging technologies, external regulation, and industry best practices through continuing professional development, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
  • Client Issue Diagnosis: Conduct in-depth analysis of the operational information gathered through interviews and research to diagnose underlying client issues and problems and to inform the design of multiple solutions.
  • Health, Safety, and Environment: Ensure that business activities and individuals (e.g., employees, contractors, and visitors) within the area of responsibility adhere to the organization's health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions, to safeguard the environment, protect the well-being of individuals, and minimize business risk.
  • Exploration Plan Development: Coordinate the application of exploration plans within across departments, within a business unit.
  • Solutions Analysis: Develop innovative solutions by integrating and analyzing complex and diverse information sources.
  • Request for Bid Solicitation/Proposal/Tender Response: Gather information and resources and draft and complete proposals in response to the most-complex bid solicitations, request for proposal, and request for tender to create the best chance of being awarded the contract. May lead a team to develop tenders/proposals and fulfill all process requirements (in terms of deadlines, documentation, etc.) in response to bid solicitations, request for proposal, and request for tender.
  • Mineral Reserves and Resource Assessment: Oversee strategy implementation within a business unit, ensuring efficient and accurate mineral resource assessment within a business unit.
  • Supporting pre-positioning GHD to identify new opportunities, in addition to planning, developing, and leading proposal preparation that focuses on GHD’s strengths
  • Growing the business through expansion and development of internal and external clients
  • Acting as a subject matter expert managing hydrogeological investigations and characterization projects in Ontario and throughout North America
  • Directing, reviewing, and delivering work with other geoscientists, engineers, and environmental technologists on projects related to contaminated sites, land development, municipal planning, and infrastructure
  • Providing project direction, strategy, and support related to MECP procedures for land developments, including site servicing (i.e., private wells and onsite septic system), as well as Conservation Authority development application requirements
  • Providing direction, strategy and support with respect to Conservation Authority Low Impact Developments (LIDs), infiltration assessments, site water balances (treatment train tool), water balances for the protection of natural features, and field investigations to characterize watercourses, waterbodies, or wetlands
  • Leading and reviewing work related to applications for land development, infrastructure, and other projects for the taking and discharge of groundwater (EASRs/PTTWs) and approvals from regulatory bodies (including, but not limited to MECP, MNRF, DFO, Conservation Authorities, and municipal requirements, including the City of Toronto)
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff to prepare high quality, defensible deliverables

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Earth Science, Geology, Hydrogeology, or related Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or equivalent discipline; Master's degree is considered an asset
  • Qualified Person (QP) as referenced under O.Reg. 153/04 (an asset)

What you bring to the team

  • General Experience: Experience level enables candidate to provide leadership to others regarding work related systems, processes and challenges
  • Managerial Experience: Experience of supervising and directing people and other resources to achieve specific end results within limited timeframes
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience with your P. Geo. or P.Eng. License
  • Proven business development capabilities in the Ontario market with outstanding client management skills and project execution capabilities
  • Working knowledge in geology and hydrogeology investigations, contaminant migration analyses, impact assessments, water supply and source water protection, water well pumping tests, water well surveys, hydraulic testing, and septic system evaluations/design
  • Excellent written and verbal communication are required to effectively review and edit technical documentation prepared by junior and intermediate team members
  • Understanding and experience in well sampling, landfill monitoring, and underground storage tank removals would be an asset
  • Added experience in Contaminant Management Programs would be an asset
  • Strong understanding of soil classification; overburden and bedrock drilling methods; and soil, sediment, and groundwater sampling protocols
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to project sites throughout Ontario as required and eligibility for US work visa
  • Ability to speak/write in French and Spanish would be an asset
