Job Title: Personal Support Worker (PSW)

Employment Type: Full-Time/Part-Time

Job Location: Thunder Bay and scheduled rotation to remote KO communities

Keewaytinook Okimakanak is seeking a compassionate and reliable Personal Support Worker to provide quality care and assistance to clients in their homes or care facilities.

SUMMARY

The PSW will work under the direction of the Community Health Director for day-to-day supervision and report daily to the Home and Community Care (HCC) Nurse Supervisor. The PSW will be responsible for providing personal care, respite assistance and on occasion home management to clients based on the assessment needs. The PSW will fly into KO communities on a rotational basis. PSW will complete date entry into the CEMR known as Telus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide personal care with the HCC clients that include bathing, grooming, basic foot care, transferring, toileting, maintain any medical regimes, dressings, and promoting self reliance.
  • Provide respite care based on clients’ plan of care which may include palliative care and supervision of the client.
  • Assist with home management that include feeding, cooking, meal prepping and any household chores.
  • Complete daily data entry into the CEMR, maintaining and keeping accurate and confidential client records.
  • Participate in continuing education sessions as requested by KO HCC Nurse Supervisor, as well as fellow Personal Support Workers in community.
  • Assisting the KO HCC Nurse Supervisor with maintaining an accurate inventory list and recommends purchases for community home care needs.
  • Communicate with other PSW in community to go over daily plans and tasks.
  • Identify needs of clients and directly communicate with PSW supervisor.
  • Report any incidents at work or with clients to HCC Nurse Supervisor and PSW supervisor.
  • Reporting any maintenance issues with work vehicle, computer software, IP phones, fax machine, printers.

QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS

  • One year experience as a personal support worker or related health field.
  • Must have PSW certificate or is willing to obtain.
  • Have knowledge and experience in care planning and documenting.
  • Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree or Ojibway is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate positively with other HCC team members, families and clients.
  • Must be willing to travel to KO communities on a rotational basis.

Keewaytinook Okimakanak, which means Northern Chiefs in Oji-Cree, is a non-political Chiefs Council serving Deer Lake, Fort Severn, Keewaywin, McDowell Lake, North Spirit Lake and Poplar Hill First Nations. The organization is directed by the Chiefs of the member First Nations who form the Board of Directors. Through its close awareness of community needs and its team approach, the Council advises and assists its member First Nations. The Council provides services in the areas of health, education, economic development, employment assistance, legal, public works, finance and administration, and computer communications (K-Net Services). The Executive Director liaises with the six Chiefs, with the staff of the Council and with other organizations and governments.
