The salary range for this position is:

  • Recruitment range: $115,274 - $144,093 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.
  • Performance range: $165,707 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

Mandate

The Director, Faculty Labour Relations provides strategic guidance to senior leadership on faculty-related matters, ensuring compliance with the Faculty/Librarian Collective Agreement, university policies, and government regulations.

Additionally, the Director liaises with university departments to support the Vice-President Academic & Provost’s office and advance institutional goals. In the absence of the Executive Director, the Director assumes key responsibilities related to faculty relations and academic administration, maintaining the university’s reputation and ensuring effective grievance, arbitration, policy and Collective Agreement implementation.

Objectives

  • To be an authority on matters related to the Faculty & Librarian Collective Agreement, existing policies and procedures and government legislation (University Act, Immigration Standards etc.) with an ability to analyze complex circumstances that are not readily addressed by standard procedures or precedent, and to apply original thinking to solve/mitigate. To make recommendations for change.
  • To carry out individual negotiations with or mediate issues arising between Faculty and Departmental Academic leaders and the Faculty Association ( the “union”), meeting, as appropriate, with the union’s Member Services Officer or other staff to resolve issues efficiently and fairly.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with faculty members and librarians in scheduled and ad hoc formal and informal settings in order to effectively resolve complex and sensitive issues (such as allegations of bullying/harassment/sexual assault; suicidal ideations; discipline; retirement planning; return to work or accommodations). Work to strengthen the relationships between the University and our faculty and librarians.
  • While working autonomously, the role ensures the effective administration of processes, policies, and faculty-related matters within the VPAC portfolio, while seeking guidance from senior leadership, external legal counsel, and government officials as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Graduate degree in Industrial Relations or Human Resources, or an undergraduate degree preferably in Law or Human Resources with a relevant professional designation. Minimum of 8 years’ experience working in a labour relations and/or human resources consultant capacity within a large, complex, multi-union environment.
  • Experience leading and supervising professional staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing the principles of truth, reconciliation and respect; equity, diversity and inclusion; and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
  • Excellent communications, strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate clearly complex documents and procedures to line administrators, answer questions clearly and lead discussions in workshops and seminars.
  • Demonstrated ability to use current office software and ability to use the university Banner and FAST databases.
